• The Microsoft patch "Vredir" is required if you want to use Printer
Status and Alerts on a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me
computer for a printer that has been shared directly from a
computer with Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
installed. Failure to install the patch could cause an intermittent
blue screen to appear on the client computer.
• In order for Printer Status and Alerts to function on the client
computer when using Microsoft shared products, the host system
must have either the Printer Status and Alerts or the HP Driver
Autoconfiguration option from the HP installer on the computer.
• For Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me client computers
that have Printer Status and Alerts installed, installing a printer
using the Point and Print method will not activate Printer Status
and Alerts.
• ISSUE (External): Printer Status and Alerts does not hook with drivers to show
status when using Point and Print to Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me
clients.
DESCRIPTION: When using Point-and-Print to Windows 95, Windows
98, and Windows Me clients with the Printer Status and Alerts software
already running, the printer icon does not appear in the left pane of the
Printer Status and Alerts window.
WORKAROUND: Using the installer, browse to the shared printer path to
allow Printer Status and Alerts to show the status (hook) with the driver.
• ISSUE (Internal): After installing an updated PCL driver, Printer Status and Alerts
stops providing printer status, and may not show that the printer has been
installed. An error message might appear, stating that the printer is not able to
print.
DESCRIPTION: To recreate the condition, follow these steps:
1. Install updated PCL driver.
2. Verify that the printer alerts option is selected in Printer Status and Alerts.
3. Pause the printer.
No alert appears when you print a document.
WORKAROUND: First, restart the computer. It might take up to 5 minutes
for Printer Status and Alerts to recognize the printer after being restarted.
Then, manually close and open and start Printer Status and Alerts.
To close Printer Status and Alerts manually, right-click the Printer Status
and Alerts tray icon, click Exit, and select No, don't start automatically.
Restart the computer.
To start Printer Status and Alerts manually, click Start, click Run, and type
HPSTATUS.
