Replace the pickup roller and separation pad (Tray 1)

Press the print-cartridge-door button to open the print-cartridge door.

Remove the print cartridge.
After removing the print cartridge, only handle it on the ends.
Grasping the pickup-roller cover with thumb and forefinger, squeeze the left side of the pickup-
roller cover to release the left retaining tab, and then slide the cover to the left and up.
CAUTION Failure to slide the cover to the left when removing it can cause the right
retaining tab to break.

Summary

Replace Pickup Roller and Separation Pad (Tray 1)

Step 1: Open Print-Cartridge Door

Press the print-cartridge-door button to open the print-cartridge door.

Step 2: Remove Print Cartridge

Remove the print cartridge, handling it only by its ends.

Step 3: Remove Pickup-Roller Cover

Squeeze the left side of the pickup-roller cover to release the left retaining tab, then slide it left and up.

Step 4: Release Pickup Roller

Press the two black retaining tabs outward to release the pickup roller from its seat.

Step 5: Remove Old Pickup Roller

Remove the old pickup roller from the printer.

Step 6: Remove Separation Pad

Insert a flatblade screwdriver under the old separation pad and pry it up to remove.

Step 7: Install New Separation Pad

Insert the new separation pad and press down to lock both sides.

Step 8: Install New Pickup Roller

Align retaining tabs with grooves and press the pickup roller into its seat until it clicks.

Step 9: Reattach Right Pickup-Roller Cover Tab

Insert the right retaining tab of the pickup-roller cover into the retaining slot.

Step 10: Reattach Left Pickup-Roller Cover Tab

Squeeze the left side of the cover and insert the left retaining tab into the slot.

Step 11: Close Print-Cartridge Door

Close the print-cartridge door.

Replace Pickup Roller (Tray 2)

Step 1: Remove Tray 2

Remove the cassette paper tray (tray 2) from the printer.

Step 2: Open Duplex Path Door

Open the automatic two-sided path door on the front of the printer.

Step 3: Position Printer

Place the printer on the work surface with the front facing up.

Step 4: Rotate White Tabs

Pull the white tabs outward and rotate them up.

Step 5: Slide Right Tab

Slide the right tab to the right and leave it in position.

Step 6: Remove Left End Cap

Slide the pickup roller assembly to the right and remove the left end cap.

Step 7: Remove Old Pickup Roller

Remove the old pickup roller and save idler rollers.

Step 8: Insert New Pickup Roller Left Side

Insert the left side of the new pickup roller into the left slot.

Step 9: Insert New Pickup Roller Right Side

Insert the right side of the new pickup roller into the right slot.

Step 10: Secure Left End Cap

Place the end cap on the left side, push it right, and rotate the tab down.

Step 11: Engage Shaft Notches

Rotate the shaft until the notches engage and it clicks into place.

Step 12: Secure Right Tab

Push the right tab to the left and rotate the tab downward into position.

Tray 2 Separation Pad Replacement

Step 1: Remove Tray 2

Remove the cassette paper tray (tray 2) from the printer.

Step 2: Remove Separation Pad Screws

Remove the two screws securing the separation pad.

Step 3: Replace Separation Pad Assembly

Remove the old separation pad assembly and install the new one, replacing screws.

Remove Left-Side Cover

Step 1: Open Print-Cartridge Door

Open the print-cartridge door.

Step 2: Release Back Tabs

Use a flat-blade screwdriver to release two tabs at the back of the printer.

Step 3: Remove Cover

Lift the cover away from the printer.

Remove Right-Side Cover

Step 1: Open Print-Cartridge Door

Open the print-cartridge door.

Step 2: Remove Tray 2

Remove tray 2.

Step 3: Release Front Tabs

Pop the front edge of the right-side cover over the two retaining tabs.

Step 4: Remove Cover

Lift the cover away from the printer.

Remove Back Cover

Step 1: Remove Tray 2

Remove tray 2.

Step 2: Remove Side Covers

Remove the left-side and right-side covers.

Step 3: Remove Screws

Remove four screws from the printer.

Step 4: Position Printer

Tip the printer to rest on its front.

Step 5: Release Right Tab

Release the tab at the back of the printer on the right side.

Step 6: Open Duplex Door

Open the duplex access door.

Step 7: Clear Duplexer Tab

Slide the cover right to clear the tab on the duplexer tray.

Step 8: Remove Cover

Lift the cover straight up and away from the printer.

Remove Duplexer Tray

Step 1: Remove Covers

Remove the left-side, right-side, and back covers.

Step 2: Release Duplexer Tab

Pull the duplexer tray release-tab to release the magnets.

Step 3: Pull Out Tray

Pull out the duplexer tray.

Remove Top Cover

Step 1: Remove Previous Components

Remove side covers, back cover, and duplexer tray.

Step 2: Remove Rear Screws

Remove two screws at the back of the printer.

Step 3: Remove Side Screws

Remove one screw on the left and one on the right side of the printer.

Step 4: Release Control Panel Cable

Release the control-panel cable on the left side of the printer.

Step 5: Lift Top Cover

Lift the top cover off the printer.

Fuser Component Removal

Fan Removal

Remove covers, disconnect fan cable, unthread wires, remove screws, and unhook clip.

Duplex-Drive Gears Removal

Remove covers, fan, and three screws to lift the duplex-drive gears assembly.

Duplex Solenoid Removal

Remove covers, fan, duplex-drive gears, disconnect cable, and remove screw to lift solenoid.

Fuser Removal

Remove covers, fan, gears, formatter, disconnect cables, and remove screws to release fuser.
