Step 1: Setup Instructions

Important Setup Note

Do not connect the USB cable until step 17 for correct software installation.

Step 2: Remove Tape and Cardboard

Remove Internal Packaging

Remove all tape and cardboard from the inside of the device.

Step 3: Locate Components

Identify Included Items

Locate Windows CD, Mac CD, User Guide, cables, and faceplate.

Step 4: Unfold Paper Trays

Unfold Paper Trays

Follow diagrams a, b, and c to unfold the paper trays.

Step 5: Attach Control Panel Faceplate

Attach Faceplate Tabs

Fit faceplate tabs into slots and press down until snap into place.

Faceplate Attachment Importance

Ensure edges are even and buttons align; faceplate is required to work.

Step 6: Load Paper

Load Paper into Bottom Tray

Load plain white paper into the bottom tray, avoid forcing.

Step 7: Connect Power Cord and Adapter

Connect Power Adapter

Connect the power adapter and cord to the device and power source.

Important USB Connection Note

Do not connect the USB cable until step 17 for correct software installation.

Step 8: Connect Supplied Phone Cord

Connect for 1-LINE Phone

Connect phone cord to device and wall jack for single-line phone use.

Connect for 2-EXT Phone

Connect phone/answering machine to the 2-EXT port for dual-line use.

Advanced Phone Features

Refer to User Guide for DSL, VoIP, ISDN, voice mail, or distinctive ring features.

Step 9: Press the On Button

Power On Device

Press the On button and wait for the print cartridge prompt.

Step 10: Open Print Cartridge Door

Open Cartridge Door

Lift the print cartridge door; the carriage moves to the right.

Step 11: Remove Tape from Cartridges

Remove Cartridge Tape

Pull the tab to remove tape from print cartridges; do not touch contacts.

Step 12: Insert Tri-Color Print Cartridge

Insert Tri-Color Cartridge

Slide tri-color cartridge into the left slot and push until it snaps.

Cartridge Insertion Caution

Device must be On to insert cartridges.

Step 13: Insert Black Print Cartridge

Insert Black Cartridge

Slide black cartridge into the right slot and push until it snaps.

Secure Cartridges and Close Door

Ensure cartridges are secure, then close the print cartridge door.

Step 14: Align Print Cartridges

Print Alignment Page

Press OK to print the alignment page.

Scan Alignment Page

Place alignment page in document feeder and press OK to scan.

Step 15: Turn On Your Computer

Prepare Computer

Turn on computer, log in, wait for desktop, and close open programs.

Step 16: Insert the Correct CD

Install Software (Windows)

Insert Windows CD, follow onscreen instructions, select 'directly to this computer'.

Install Software (Mac)

Insert Mac CD and continue to the next page for installation.

Startup Screen Troubleshooting

If startup screen fails, open My Computer, CD-ROM, and run setup.exe.

Step 17: Connect the USB Cable

Connect USB (Windows)

Follow prompts, connect USB cable to device and computer, complete wizards.

Connect USB (Mac)

Connect USB cable, insert Mac CD, run Installer, complete Setup Assistant.

Troubleshooting

Paper Jam Troubleshooting

Lift control panel, remove paper, check for packaging tape, and ensure panel is secure.

Cartridge Message Troubleshooting

Remove cartridges, check/remove tape from contacts, re-insert, and close door.

USB Connection Troubleshooting (Windows)

If no prompt, re-insert Windows CD. If Add Hardware appears, Cancel, unplug USB, re-insert CD.

Device Setup Failed Troubleshooting (Windows)

Verify faceplate, unplug/replug device, check connections, ensure USB is direct.

Get help via HP Solution Center (Win) or Finder Help menu (Mac).
