Do not rely exclusivelyupon the safety
devicesbuiltintoyoursaw.
As a chain saw user,
you
shouldtake several steps to keepyour cutting
jobs free from accident or injury.
(1)With a basic understanding of kickback, you can
reduceor eliminate the element ofsurprise.
Sudden surprise contributes to accidents.
(2) Keepa good firm grip on the sawwith both
hands,the right hand on the rear handle, and the
left hand on ~hefront handle,when the engine is
running. Useafirm grip with thumbs and fingers
encircling the chain saw handles.A firm grip will
help you reduce kickback and maintain control
ofthe saw.Don’t let go.
(3) Makesurethat the area in which you are cutting
is freefrom obstructions. Do notletthe noseof
the guide bar contacta log, branch, or any other
obstruction which could be hit while you are
operating the saw.
(4) Cut at high engine speeds.
(5) Do notoverreachor cut aboveshoulder height.
(6) Followmanufacturer’s sharpening and
maintenance instructionsforthe sawchain.
(7)Only use replacement bars and chains specified
bythe manufacturer orthe equivalent.

(1)Do not operatea chain sawwhen you are
fatigued.
(2) Use safetyfootwear; snug-fitting clothing;
protectivegloves; and eye,hearing, and head
protectiondevices.
(3) Use caution when handling fuel. Movethe chain
sawat least 10feet (3 m)from the fueling point
beforestartingthe engine.
(4) Do not allow other personsto be nearthe chain
sawwhen starting or cutting with the chain saw.
Keepbystandersand animals out ofthe work
area.

Do not startcutting until you havea clear work
area,securefooting, and a planned retreatpath
fromthe falling tree.
Keepall partsof your body awayfrom the saw
chain when the engine is running.
Beforeyou startthe engine, makesurethat the
sawchain is notcontacting anything.
Carry the chain sawwith the engine stopped,the
guide bar and saw chain to the rear,and the
muffler awayfrom your body.
Do notoperatea chain sawthat is damaged,
improperly adjusted,or notcompletely and
securely assembled. Besurethat the sawchain
stops movingwhen the throttle control trigger is
released.
(10)Shut off the engine beforesetting the chain saw
down.
(11)Useextreme caution when cutting small size
brush and saplings because slender material
may catchthe sawchain and be whipped toward
youor pull youoff balance.
(12)When cuttting a limb that is under tension be
alert for springback sothat you will not be struck
when the tension inthe wood fibers is released.
(13)Keepthe handles dry,clean, and free of oil or
fuel mixture.
(14)Operatethe chain saw only in well-ventilated
areas.
(15)Do notoperate a chain sawin atree unless you
havebeen specifically trained todo so.
(16)Do not operate a chain saw above shoulder
height.
(17)All chain saw service, other than the items
listed in the operator’s/owner’s safetyand
maintenance instructions, should be performed
by competent chain saw service personnel.
(Forexample, if improper tools are usedto
removethe flywheel or if an improper tool is
used to hold the flywheel in order to remove
the clutch, structural damage to the flywheel
could occur and subsequently cause the
flywheel to burst.)
(18)When transporting your chain saw,use the
appropriate guide bar scabbard.
