FCC Statement and RF Exposure Compliance:

The device complies with FCC Class B digital device limits (Part 15 of FCC Rules) and is designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference. Users are advised to reorient/relocate the receiving antenna, increase separation between equipment and receiver, or connect the equipment to a different circuit if interference occurs. RF Exposure Compliance and Control Guidelines and Operating Instructions:

To ensure compliance with occupational/controlled environmental exposure limits, users must adhere to specific procedures:

  • Do not remove the RF Exposure Label.
  • User awareness instructions should accompany the device when transferred.
  • Do not use the device if operational requirements are not met.
  • Transmit no more than 50% of the time. Press the Push-To-Talk (PTT) key to transmit and release to receive.
  • Keep the radio unit at least 2.5 cm away from the face, ensuring the antenna is away from the face and eyes.
  • When worn on the body, use only Hytera-approved holders, holsters, cases, body harnesses, or clips to avoid exceeding FCC RF exposure limits.
  • Use of non-approved antennas, batteries, and accessories can cause the radio to exceed FCC RF exposure guidelines.
  • Contact your local dealer for optional accessories.

IC Statement:

The device has been tested and complies with SAR limits. Canadian information on RF exposure and compliance is available. The device complies with Industry Canada license-exempt RSS standard(s), subject to two conditions: it must not cause harmful interference, and it must accept any interference received, including undesired operation.

Before Use:

Inserting Batteries:

The radio can use either the provided Ni-MH battery or three AA alkaline batteries.

  1. Slide the battery latch to unlock and remove the cover.
  2. Insert the battery according to polarity markings.
  3. Replace the battery cover and slide the latch to lock.

Charging the Ni-MH Battery:

  • Caution: Use only the specified power adapter and read the Safety Information Booklet before charging.
  • Fully charge the battery before initial use.
  1. Insert the USB plug of the power adapter into the radio's USB port.
  2. Plug the power adapter into a power outlet.

Attaching the Belt Clip:

  1. Align the rails on the belt clip with the groove on the battery.
  2. Press the belt clip downwards into place.

Basic Operations:

Turning the Radio On/Off:

Rotate the On-Off knob clockwise or counter-clockwise until a click is heard.

Adjusting the Volume:

Rotate the Volume Control knob clockwise (increase) or counter-clockwise (decrease) after turning on the radio.

Selecting a Channel:

To communicate, all users must select the same channel.

  1. Press the Menu key; the channel number flashes.
  2. Press the Up or Down key to select a channel.
  3. Press the PTT key to confirm.

Selecting a CTCSS/CDCSS Code:

This feature prevents unwanted calls. Only calls from radios with matching CTCSS/CDCSS codes are received.

  1. Press the Menu key twice; the code number flashes.
  2. Press the Up or Down key to select a code.
    • Note: Code 0 means no CTCSS/CDCSS code is selected. Select code 0 to communicate with radios without this feature.
  3. Press the PTT key to confirm.

LCD Icons:

The LCD displays various icons to indicate radio status:

  • Battery: Battery level.
  • Radio Mode: Current operating mode.
  • Weather Mode (TF-512 only): Indicates weather mode.
  • Weather Alert (TF-512 only): Indicates a weather alert.
  • Silent Mode: Speaker muted.
  • Keypad Tone: Keypad tones enabled.
  • Keypad Lock: Keypad locked.
  • Scan: Scan feature active.
  • VOX: Voice Operated Transmit active.
  • Room Monitor: Room monitor feature active.
  • Battery Save: Battery save mode active.
  • Talk End Tone: Talk end tone enabled.
  • Call Tone: Call tone enabled.
  • TX: Transmitting.
  • RX: Receiving.
  • HI: High Power (TF-512 only).
  • LO: Low Power (TF-512 only).
  • Channel Number: Current channel.
  • CTCSS/CDCSS Code: Current CTCSS/CDCSS code.

Call Services:

Initiating a Call:

  1. Select a channel and CTCSS/CDCSS code.
  2. Hold the radio 2.5 to 5 cm from your mouth.
  3. Press and hold the PTT key, then speak. The radio displays TX.
  4. Release the PTT key when finished speaking.

Receiving a Call:

Listen to the call without operation. To speak, wait for the other person to release their PTT key, then press and hold your PTT key and speak.

Supplementary Features:

Keypad Lock:

Locks the keypad to prevent accidental operations. Calls can still be initiated, and the radio can be turned on/off.

  • To lock/unlock, press and hold the Keypad Lock key until the icon appears/disappears.

Scan:

Helps find team members who changed channels or find unused channels.

  • Press the Scan key to turn on. The radio displays the scan icon and scans channels. It stays on an active channel for two seconds after the signal disappears, then resumes scanning.
  • Press the Scan key again to turn off.

Monitor:

Allows the radio to receive weak signals on the current channel.

  • Press and hold the Monitor key to turn on. The radio displays RX and monitors the channel.
  • Release the Monitor key to turn off.

Power Level (TF-512 only):

Adjusts the power level for the selected channel.

  1. Press the Menu key three times; the current setting flashes.
  2. Press the Up or Down key to select:
    • HI: High power for distant radios (consumes more battery).
    • LO: Low power for close radios (saves battery).
    • Note: Power level cannot be changed from low to high for channels 8 to 14.
  3. Press the PTT key to confirm.

Call Tone:

Transmits a tone to notify others you want to talk.

  1. Select a call tone:
    • a. Press the Menu key until the call tone icon displays (TF-512: four times; TF-515: three times).
    • b. Press the Up or Down key to select a call tone. Setting to OFF turns off the feature.
    • c. Press the PTT key to confirm.
  2. Press the Call Tone key to transmit the tone.

Talk End Tone:

Sends a tone when the PTT key is released, signaling the end of your talk.

  1. Press the Menu key until the talk end tone icon displays (TF-512: six times; TF-515: five times).
  2. Press the Up or Down key to select ON or OFF.
  3. Press the PTT key to confirm.

Voice Operated Transmit (VOX):

Allows automatic voice transmission when voice volume reaches a preset level, with or without an earpiece.

  1. Press the Menu key until the VOX icon displays (TF-512: five times; TF-515: four times).
  2. Press the Up or Down key to select L1, L2, L3 (sensitivity levels) or OFF.
    • L1: low sensitivity (noisy environments)
    • L2: medium sensitivity (common environments)
    • L3: high sensitivity (quiet environments)
  3. Press the PTT key to confirm.
    • Note: There is a short delay between starting to talk and transmission.

Silent Mode:

Mutes the speaker to avoid disturbance from received calls. The backlight turns on and flashes when calls are received, indicating missed calls even after the call disappears.

  1. Press the Menu key until the silent mode icon displays (TF-512: seven times; TF-515: six times).
  2. Press the Up or Down key to select ON or OFF.
  3. Press the PTT key to confirm.

Keypad Tone:

Enables a tone when a key is pressed.

  1. Press the Menu key until the keypad tone icon displays (TF-512: eight times; TF-515: seven times).
  2. Press the Up or Down key to select ON or OFF.
  3. Press the PTT key to confirm.

Room Monitor:

Allows the radio to automatically transmit voice when the voice volume reaches a preset level, useful for monitoring a room when away.

  • Note: In room monitor mode, the radio cannot receive signals.
  1. Press the Menu key until the room monitor icon displays (TF-512: nine times; TF-515: eight times).
  2. Press the Up or Down key to select L1, L2, L3 (sensitivity levels) or OFF.
    • L1: low sensitivity (noisy environments)
    • L2: medium sensitivity (common environments)
    • L3: high sensitivity (quiet environments)
  3. Press the PTT key to confirm.

Sleep Level:

Allows the radio to enter sleep mode for a selected duration if no call is received or key is pressed, saving battery power.

  1. Press the Menu key until the sleep level icon displays (TF-512: ten times; TF-515: nine times).
  2. Press the Up or Down key to select L1, L2, L3 (sleep durations: one, two, or three seconds) or OFF.
  3. Press the PTT key to confirm.
    • Note: In sleep mode, the radio does not receive or send signals. Do not enable for emergencies.

Stopwatch and Timer:

  • Stopwatch: Counts upwards from zero.
  • Timer: Counts down from 59 minutes and 59 seconds.
  1. Press the Menu key until "00:00" displays (TF-512: eleven times; TF-515: ten times).
  2. To start:
    • Stopwatch: Press the Up key.
    • Timer: Press the Down key.
  3. To pause: Press the Call Tone key.
  4. To resume (optional): Press the Call Tone key again.
  5. To reset: Press the Scan/Monitor key.
  6. To turn off: Press the PTT key or the Menu key.

Weather Mode (TF-512 only):

Allows listening to weather reports and setting alerts for NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts.

  • Note: In weather mode, the radio cannot receive or send calls. Not recommended for emergencies.

Entering/Exiting the Weather Mode:

  • Press the Weather Mode key to enter. The radio displays the weather icon.
  • Press the Weather Mode key again to exit.

Selecting a Weather Channel:

  1. In weather mode, press the Menu key; the current weather channel flashes.
  2. Press the Up or Down key to select a channel with good reception.
  3. Press the PTT key to confirm.

Turning the Weather Alert On/Off:

When on, the radio rings an alert tone and switches to the selected weather channel upon receiving NOAA emergency messages.

  1. In weather mode, press the Menu key twice; the radio displays the weather alert icon and the current setting flashes.
  2. Press the Up or Down key to select ON or OFF.
  3. Press the PTT key to confirm.

Battery Save:

Maximizes operational life on a single charge. The radio enters battery save mode if no activity or operation is detected for three seconds.

Low Battery Alert:

When battery is low, the battery icon flashes, and an alert tone rings when the PTT key is pressed. In this mode, call tones or calls cannot be initiated.

  • To exit, charge or replace the battery.

Time-out Timer (TOT):

Prevents a user from occupying a channel for more than 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, the radio stops transmitting and beeps. Release the PTT key to stop beeping.

Auto Squelch:

Improves voice clarity by automatically removing background noise during calls.

Troubleshooting:

The manual includes a table for common issues and their solutions:

Phenomena Analysis Solution
The radio cannot be turned on. The battery may be installed improperly. Remove and reattach the battery.
The battery power may run out. Recharge or replace the battery.
The battery may suffer from poor contact caused by dirtied or damaged battery contacts. Clean the battery contacts or replace the battery.
During receiving, the voice is weak, discontinuous or totally inactive. The battery voltage may be low. Recharge or replace the battery.
The volume level may be low. Increase the volume.
The speaker may be blocked. Clean the surface of the speaker.
You cannot communicate with other members. The channel or CTCSS/CDCSS code may be inconsistent with that of other members. Set your channel and CTCSS/CDCSS code to the same as those of other members.
You may be too far away from other members. Move towards other members.
You hear unknown voices or noise. You may be interrupted by radios using the same channel and/or CTCSS/CDCSS code. Change the channel and/or the CTCSS/CDCSS code.
The radio may be set with no CTCSS/CDCSS code. Set a CTCSS/CDCSS code for all radios in your team to avoid interference.
You are unable to hear anyone because of too much noise and hiss. You may be too far away from other members. Move towards other members.
You may locate in an unfavorable position. For example, your communication may be blocked by high buildings or frustrated in the underground areas. Move to an open and flat area, restart the radio, and try it again.
It could be the result of external disturbance (such as electromagnetic interference). Stay away from equipment that may cause interference.
You cannot use the keys. The keypad may fail to function temporarily. Restart the radio.
The LCD does not display any information. The LCD may fail to work temporarily. Restart the radio.
