Bendix
type
axle
shaf
t
univers
al
and
when
possible t
he
cost
is
usually
nearly
equal
to
the
cost
of
a
new
assembly.
For
thi
s
reas
on t
he
factory
no
longer
suppl
ies
component
parts.
Aft
er
con
sider
ab
le mileage a
joint
assembly
may
pull
apa
rt
upon
removal
from
the
vehicle.
This
does
no
t necessarily
mean
that
the
assembly
is
no
l
onge
r
serviceable,
for
usually
when
it
is
reassembled
as
outlined
below
it
will
be
found
satisfactory.
Af
ter
reass
emb
ly
grasp
both
ends
of
the
shaft
in
th
e
hands
and
twist
the
en
ds
back
a
nd
forth.
Should
exce
ssive
wear
be
indicated
by
the
ba
ck
lash
or
lost
moti
on
the
assembly
should
te
replaced.
Th
e
universal
joint
cann
ot
possibly
become
di
sas-
sembled
after
it
is
installed
in
the
vehicle.
To
reassemble
t
he
axle
shaft
and
universal
j
oint
follow
the
sequen
ce
outlined
below:
a.
Pla
ce
the
differential
h
alf
of
th
e axle
shaft
in
a vise,
with
the
ground
portion
above
the
jaws.
b .
Install
the
center
ball
(one
with
hole
drilled
in
it)
in
the
socket
in
the
shaft,
with
the
hole
and
groove
facing
you.
c.
Drop
the
center
ball
pin
into
the
drilled
passage
in
the
wheel
half
of
the
shaft.
d.
Place
the
wheel
half
of
the
shaft
on
the
center
ball.
Then
slip
three
balls
into
the
ra
ceways.
e.
Turn
the
center
ball
until
the
groove
lines
up
with
the
raceway
for
the
re
maining
ball.

it

ter
the
assembly
has
been
removed
,
the
univ
ersal
j
oint
may
be
disassembl
ed
as
follows:
a.
Inspect
to
determin
e
the
method
of
attachment
of
the
front
axle
shaft
to
the
join
t.
Where
th
ree
screws
are
us
ed, follow
step
b.
Where
there
are
no
screws, follow
step
c.
After
the
axle
shaft
has
been
separated
from
the
joint,
follow
steps
d
through
h for
both
type
s.
b.
Remove
the
three
screws
holding
the
front
axle
shaft
to
the
joint.
Pull
the
shaft
free
of
the
splined
inQer
race.
To
remove
the
axle
shaft
re-
tainer,
remove
the
retainer
ring
on
the
axle
shaft.
c.
To
remove
the
axle
shaft
from
the
joint,
use
a
wooden
pry
and
exert
force
in
the
direction
of
the
~axis
of
the
axle
shaft.
Use
a
mallet
,
if
necessary,
to
exert
enough
force
to
drive
the
retaining
ring,
in-
stalled
on
the
end
of
the
axle
shaft,
into
its
groove
in
the
spline,
permitting
the
joint
to
be
slipped
off
the
axle
shaft.
d .
Push
down
on
various
points
of
the
inner
race
and
cage
until
the
balls
can
be
removed
with
the
