With the shoe and lining assemblies installed and
the brake drum in place loosen the anchor pin lock
nuts at the bottom of the backing plate. Adjust -
ment is made by turning the eccentr ic anc hor pins
toward each other, Fig. 284, and down until the
shoes are set to the proper clea rance as determ in ed
by feeler gauges. The recommended shoe settin g
is
. 005" [.127 mm.] clearan ce at the heel (low er
end), and .008" [.203 mm.] at the toe (upper end)
of the brake shoe lining. On early models, a slot
was provided in t he brake drum for checking these
clearances. This slot was eliminated in later models.

The hand brake is mechanically operated through
a cable and condu it and is an internal expanding

type unit mounted on the propeller shaft directly
back of t he transfer case.
On Model DJ -3 A the rear brake shoes are operated
through cables an d conduits to form t he hand or
parking brake. A brake cab le equalizer and adjust -
ing r od, Fig. 284, is located directly back of the
frame center cross member.

Th e hand brake is locat ed on the propeller shaft at
the rear of the trans f er case, see Fi g. 285. Th e
brake is operated by a cable connection from the
brake handle mounted on t he instrument panel.
To adjust the hand brake, the following sequence
should be followe d:
