S-1 . G ENERAL
S emiellipt ical leaf springs are used for all models.
Th e springs a re hung longitudinally from the frame
side rails by mea ns of brackets we ld ed to t he rails.
All axles,
except DJ -3 A front axles, are firmly at-
tach ed to the sprin gs by U-bolts ( spr ing clips),
spri ng sadd l es we ld ed to the undersi de of the ax les,
and spring pl ate s un der the springs . M odel DJ -3 A
fr
ont axles are attached to t he sprin gs with con-
ventional bolts and spring plates. Sprin g center
bolts are inserted in the axle spring saddl es to pre-
vent sh if ting of the axle.
All
front spring s, ex cept as noted below, are pro-
vided with shackles at the front ends of the sp r ings
and p iv ot bo l ts at the rear e nds of the springs .
M odel CJ -5 up to Seri al No. 44437 and M odel
C J-6 up to Seria l No. 11981 are provid ed wi th
shack l es at the rear ends of t he front spr ings, and
pivo t bolts at the front ends.
All r ear springs are provided with shackles at the
rear end and pivot bolts at the front end.
Sprin gs should be examin ed periodically for broke n
or shifted leaves, lo ose or missing r ebound clips,
angle of spring sha ckles, and position of springs
on the saddl es. S prings with shifted le aves do n ot
have thei r norma l strength. Missing rebound clips
may permit the sprin g leaves to fan out or br eak
on rebound. Br oken le aves may mak e the vehicle
hard to handle or permi t the axle to shift out of
line. W ea k ened sprin gs may br ea k causin g difficulty
in steering. Spring attach ing clips or bolts must be

vehicle in spection and torqued 45 to 55 l b-ft.

S-2. Spring Sh a ckl es
Ru bber-b ushed shackles are provided on all c urrent
pr o du ct i on vehicles. Th e steel-backed rubber
(sil ent bloc) bushin gs a re pres s ed into the spr ing
eyes
and mounting brackets. Th e shackle bolts
ti ghten the side plates against the inner steel back-
ing of the bushings. Oscill ation of the spr ings is
taken in the rubb er bushings .
All veh icles produ ced befo re early 1957 were
eq ui pped with U -s h ac kles and thread ed core bush-
ings. See P a r. S-6 for service i nformation on U -
sh ac kles.
S- 3. Pivot Bolt s
M odels DJ -3 A, CJ -2 A, CJ-3A, and Cj - 3B are
equipped with bronz e bus hin gs, pivot bolts, a nd
lu br i catio n fittings. Th e bolts are secured with
castellated nu ts a nd cotter pins. See Fig. 302.
M odels CJ -5 and CJ -6 are equipped with rubber
(silent bloc) bushin gs, bo lts, and locknuts or lock-
washers and nuts. See Fi g. 304. See P ar. S -2 for
additional description.

To r emove a spring, pr oceed as fo ll ows:
a. Raise t he vehicle wi th a j ac k und er t he axle.
