Place a stand jack und er the f ram e side rail. Th en
lo wer the axle jack so t hat the l oad is relieved from
the sprin g with the wheels restin g on the floor.
b. Rem ove nuts secur ing spr ing clip bo lts. R emov e
t he spring plate and clip bolts . Fr ee the spri ng
from th e axle by raising t he axle jack (by low erin g
the axle ja ck on DJ -3 A front axles).
c. R emov e the pivot bolt nut and drive out the
pivot bolt. Disconnect the shackl e eithe r by re-
moving the lower nuts and bolts on rubber-bushed
shackles, or by removing t he thr eaded b ushings on
U-shackles (s ee Par . S-6).
S-5. In s tall Spring
To install a spring, first install the pivot bolt. Th en,
connect the shackle usin g the following proc edure:
a . On bronze -bushed pivot bolts, install t he bolt

a nd nut and tighten the nut. T hen back it off two
cotter pin slots and ins ta ll the cotter pin. T he nut
must be dr aw n up tight ly but must be sufficiently
loose to a ll ow t he sprin g to pivot fr eely . Oth erwise
spring breakag e may resu lt.
b. On rubber-bushed pivot bolts , insta ll t he pivot
bolt and locknut ( or lockwasher an d nut) only
tigh tly eno ugh to hold the bus h ings in position un til
the vehi cle is lowered from the ja ck.
c. C onnect th e sha ckle. On rubber -b ushed sha ckles
in sta ll the bolt s as in subp aragr aph b abov e. F or
U-sh ackles see Par . S-6 installation instructions.
d. Move t he axle in to position on the sp r ing by
l owerin g (or raising) the axle jack. Place the spring
c en te r bolt in the ax le saddle. Ins ta ll the spring
clip bolts, spring plate, lockwashers, and nuts.
T orque the nuts 50 to 55 lb-ft. [3,73 a 4, 15 kg-m.].
