Either Bendix or Rzeppa old type ax le shaft may
be inst a lled in the new type axle. It is advisable,

however, to make the installation in the same man-
ner as in the past, installing shims and checking
end float as outlined below.
When installing old type axle shafts it is necessary
to determine the thi ckness of the shim pack which
must be installed between the driving flange and
the wheel hub to provide operating clearance for
the universal joint. To do this, first install the drive
flange on the axle splines without shims. Install the
axle nut and draw it up snugly. Install two op-
posite flange screws an d draw up l!nug but not
tight. Use a feeler gauge to measure the space be-
twe en the outer end of th e wheel hub and the inne r
face of
the driving fl ange. This will determine the
amount of shims to be ins talled. In order to have
prop er clear a nce in the universal joint, it is neces-
sary to install shims eq ua l to the space as measured
by the feeler gauge plus .0 15 " to .050" [0,381 a
1,270 mm.). Should no cleara nce be found between
the driving flange and hub , install .010" [0 ,254 mm .)
shim.
Rem ove the driving flange and install the corre ct
am o unt of shims as determined by this measure -

ent. R eplace th e dr iving flange an d install the
six capscrews. In stall th e axle shaft nut and re-
ch eck to make certain that t he proper end float has
been obtained. To make this check first back off
the axle shaft nut so a .050" [1,270 mm .) thickness
gauge will go between the nut and the driving
flange. T ap en d of shaft with lead hammer which
will force t he shaft in the amount of the end float.
Me asu re the clearance between the nut an d the
driving flange. If there is less than .015" add to
thi ck ness of shim pack; if more th an .050" remov e /
corr ec t am ou nt of shims. . I
