Overview

This document describes the JVC XV-N320B and XV-N322S DVD Players, offering comprehensive instructions for setup, operation, and maintenance.

Function Description

The JVC DVD Player is designed to play various disc formats, including DVD VIDEO, DVD-R/-RW (Video format), SVCD, Video CD, Audio CD (CD-DA), and CD-R/RW discs containing CD-DA, SVCD, Video CD, MP3, or JPEG files. It supports both NTSC and PAL video systems, converting PAL signals to NTSC for output. The player features multiple audio outputs, including analog and digital (coaxial), to connect to a TV, stereo amplifier, or digital audio device with a built-in decoder for high-quality surround sound (Linear PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS).

Key playback functions include:

  • Normal Playback: Standard disc playback.
  • Resume Playback: The player can memorize the last stopped position on a disc (if the disc is still in the tray, or for up to 10 previously played discs with "DISC RESUME" enabled), allowing users to continue from where they left off.
  • Pause: Temporarily stops playback, with the option to advance still pictures frame by frame.
  • Fast Forward/Backward: Allows rapid navigation through content.
  • Slow-motion Playback: Plays content at reduced speeds.
  • Skip Chapter/Track: Jumps to the beginning of the next or previous chapter/track. Holding the button during playback allows advanced/reversed navigation at 5 times normal speed.
  • Variable Playback (VARI-PLAY): Plays DVD Video discs at approximately 1.2 or 1.5 times (FAST) or 0.8 or 0.6 times (SLOW) normal speed, with sound and subtitles (except for DTS) remaining active. For SVCD/VCD, it plays at about 2 times (FAST) or 0.5 times (SLOW) normal speed.
  • Jump Back: Moves the playback position 10 seconds back within the current title.
  • Disc Menu Navigation: Allows interaction with disc menus for SVCD/VCD with Playback Control (PBC) and DVD Video discs.
  • Direct Selection: Users can directly select titles, chapters, or tracks using numeric buttons.
  • Repeat Playback: Offers options to repeat the current file, group of files, all files on the disc, or a specific A-B segment.
  • Random Playback: Plays tracks in a random order (unavailable for DVD).
  • Program Playback: Allows users to create a custom playback order of up to 99 tracks (unavailable for DVD).
  • Zoom Function: Magnifies JPEG images (x1.5/x2).
  • Picture Rotation/Reflection: Rotates JPEG images by 90 degrees or reflects them vertically/horizontally.
  • Slide Show Playback: Plays JPEG images as a slide show, with 11 selectable effects, random effect, or no effect.

The player also includes a Video Fine Processor (VFP) function to adjust picture characteristics, offering presets like NORMAL and CINEMA, and two USER presets for customized settings (Gamma, Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Tint, Sharpness, Y Delay). Sound effects can also be applied, with increasing intensity as the effect value increases.

Usage Features

The JVC DVD Player is designed for user-friendly operation with a remote control and on-screen displays.

Initial Setup:

Upon first power-on, the player guides the user through initial settings for:

  • Menu Language: Selects the language for on-screen displays.
  • Monitor Type: Configures the display for 16:9 wide-screen TVs or 4:3 conventional TVs (Letter Box or Pan Scan conversion).
  • Digital Audio Output: Sets the digital audio signal type (PCM ONLY, DOLBY DIGITAL/PCM, STREAM/PCM) based on the connected receiver/decoder.

Connections:

  • Basic Video: Connects directly to a TV's video input using the supplied audio/video cable (Yellow for video).
  • S-Video: Connects to a TV's S-video input for improved picture quality (S-video cable not supplied). S-video and component jacks cannot be used simultaneously.
  • Component Video: Connects to a TV's component (Y, PB, PR) jacks for the best picture quality, enabling progressive scanning mode.
  • Analog Audio: Connects to a stereo amplifier or TV using the supplied audio/video cable (White/Red for audio). If the TV has a monaural input, an optional audio cable to convert stereo to monaural is needed.
  • Digital Audio: Connects to a Dolby Digital or DTS decoder or an amplifier with a built-in decoder via the coaxial digital output for surround sound.

Remote Control:

The remote control provides access to all player functions, including disc tray open/close, playback controls, menu navigation, direct numeric input, and specific function buttons like DISPLAY, SOUND EFFECT, VFP-I/P, ZOOM, and DIMMER. The operating range for the remote is approximately 5 meters.

On-Screen Guide Icons:

During playback, icons appear on the TV screen to indicate current status (e.g., Playback, Pause, Slow-motion, Fast Forward/Backward) and available features (e.g., multi-angle, multi-audio, multi-subtitles). These icons can be toggled on or off in the initial settings.

Pressing ON SCREEN twice brings up a menu bar with status information and various functions (TIME, REPEAT, CHAPTER, AUDIO, SUBTITLE, ANGLE, PROG, RND) that can be selected and adjusted.

Parental Lock:

A parental lock feature allows users to restrict playback of discs based on country code and a set level, protected by a 4-digit password.

Disc Compatibility:

The player supports DVD VIDEO discs with region code "1" and various other region codes if they include "1." It plays back DVD-R/-RW in DVD VIDEO format and CD-R/RW in SVCD, Video CD, Audio CD, MP3, and JPEG formats (ISO 9660). Unplayable discs include DVD-RW in VR format, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD AUDIO, CD-ROM, PHOTO CD, SACD, unfinalized discs, and discs with irregular shapes or foreign materials on the surface.

Maintenance Features

General Care:

  • Power Cord: Always pull the plug, not the cord, when disconnecting. Do not handle with wet hands. Disconnect before cleaning or moving the player. Avoid altering, twisting, or placing heavy objects on the cord. Replace damaged cords immediately.
  • Environment: Avoid moist, dusty places, direct sunlight, or proximity to heating devices.
  • Ventilation: Do not block ventilation openings to prevent heat buildup.
  • Cleaning: Use a soft cloth for cleaning the cabinet. Do not use benzene, thinner, or other organic solvents, as they can cause deformation or discoloration.
  • Internal Access: The player has no user-serviceable parts inside. Do not open the cover or back. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Foreign Objects: Do not insert metallic objects (wires, hairpins, coins) into the player.

Battery Care (Remote Control):

  • Installation: Insert two R6(SUM-3)/AA(15F) batteries according to polarity markings.
  • Lifespan: Batteries last approximately six months with normal use. Replace when remote control functions become erratic.
  • Disposal: Dispose of dead batteries properly, following local rules and laws.
  • Storage: Remove batteries if the remote control will not be used for an extended period.
  • Safety: Never leave dead batteries lying around, take them apart, mix them with other refuse, or throw them into an incinerator. Avoid contact with leaked battery liquid. Do not mix new and old batteries or different types.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides a troubleshooting section to address common issues such as:

  • Power not coming on.
  • "REGION CODE ERROR!" message.
  • Operation not possible.
  • "[LOCK]" displayed, and disc tray not opening.
  • Noisy picture.
  • Distorted picture when using component or S-video jacks.
  • No picture or blurred/divided picture on TV.
  • No sound/picture for MP3/JPEG files.
  • MP3/JPEG files not played in recorded order.

For any issues not resolved by troubleshooting, users are advised to consult their dealer or qualified service personnel. The manual emphasizes that the product uses a laser system and unauthorized procedures may result in hazardous radiation exposure.
