Overview

This document describes the KaVo L-MOTOR 181 DB INTRAmatic I, a dental air motor (Material number: 0.535.5060) designed for professional dental treatment. It is intended to operate or drive dental handpieces or contra-angle handpieces.

Function Description

The L-MOTOR 181 DB INTRAmatic I is an air motor that serves as a drive unit for various dental instruments. It connects to dental unit hoses with a Borden 2-hole connection and features an INTRAmatic 1 coupling, allowing attachment of all straight and contra-angle handpieces with INTRAmatic connection ISO 3964. The motor provides adjustable speed and direction of rotation for precise dental procedures. As a medical device, its use is strictly for dental treatment by dental professionals, adhering to applicable health and safety regulations, accident prevention regulations, and these instructions for use. Any modification or use for other purposes is hazardous and not permitted.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Drive speed: 5,000 to 20,000 min⁻¹
  • Drive pressure: 2.2 to 2.7 bar (32 to 39 psi), with a recommended pressure of 2.5 bar (36 psi)
  • Air consumption: Up to 60 NI/min
  • Idle torque: 2.3 Ncm at 2.2 bar (32 psi)
  • Air and water pressure (for checking with test manometer): 0.8 to 1.0 bar (12 to 15 psi)
  • Spray water amount (recommended): Approx. 80 cm³/min with the spray ring fully opened
  • Transportation and storage conditions:
    • Temperature: -20°C to +70°C (-4°F to +158°F)
    • Relative humidity: 5% RH to 95% RH, absence of condensation
    • Air pressure: 700 hPa to 1060 hPa (10 psi to 15 psi)
    • Must be protected from moisture.
  • Operating conditions:
    • Temperature: +5°C to +40°C (41°F to 104°F)
    • Maximal relative humidity: < 80%
    • Air pressure: 700 hPa to 1060 hPa (10 psi to 15 psi)
  • Sterilization: Non-sterilizable.

Usage Features

  • Connecting to the supply hose: The plug-in fitting is attached to the motor connection and screwed tight clockwise using the sleeve.
  • Attaching instruments: KaVo instruments are attached to the motor until they lock in place, then pulled to ensure secure attachment. Only reliable handpieces should be used.
  • Removing instruments: Instruments are pulled off the motor in an axial direction with a slight rotating motion.
  • Speed and direction regulation: A regulating sleeve allows continuous adjustment between idle and maximal speed, and selection of clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation.
  • Spray water regulation: The spray tap on the hose or device is rotated to adjust the water portion of the spray. Proper spray water adjustment (approx. 80 cm³/min) is crucial to prevent overheating of the device and damage to the tooth.
  • Pre-use checks: Before first use and after each use, the product must be prepared. This includes checking the drive pressure and air/water pressure using a test manometer (Mat. no. 0.411.8531). Compressed air must be dry, clean, and uncontaminated according to ISO 7494-2 to prevent premature bearing wear.
  • Initial startup: If the device has been stored strongly refrigerated, it must be heated to 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) before startup to prevent malfunction.
  • Daily operation: At the beginning of each workday, water-conducting systems should be rinsed for at least 2 minutes without an instrument attached. If there's a risk of contamination from reflux or back suction, rinse for 20-30 seconds.
  • Troubleshooting: In case of irregular running noise, significant vibration, overheating, imbalance, or insufficient grip, work should stop, and service support contacted. Missing or damaged O-rings can cause malfunctions and premature failure; they must be checked and replaced if necessary. The motor running too hot under load or uneven speed/drops may indicate issues with the handpiece or hose connection.

Maintenance Features

  • Preparation at the site of use: All residual cement, composite, or blood must be removed without delay. The medical device must be dry when transported for reconditioning and should not be placed in a solution. Reconditioning should occur as soon as possible after treatment.
  • Cleaning:
    • Manual external cleaning: Wipe the motor surface with a water-soaked cotton cloth, then dry with a soft cotton cloth. Cleaning in an ultrasonic unit is not permitted.
    • Manual/Automated internal/external cleaning: Not applicable for this device.
  • Disinfection:
    • Manual external disinfection: KaVo recommends specific products like Mikrozid AF Liquid (Schülke & Mayr), FD 322 (Dürr), or CaviCide (Metrex). Disinfectant is sprayed on a cloth, then the device is wiped down and allowed to act according to the manufacturer's instructions. Disinfectant baths or chlorine-containing disinfectants are not permitted.
    • Manual/Automated internal/external disinfection: Not applicable for this device.
  • Drying: After cleaning and disinfecting, any residual moisture should be soaked up and wiped dry with a soft cotton cloth. Automated drying is not applicable.
  • Care products and systems - Servicing: Regular care is essential to prevent premature wear and malfunctions.
    • Care with KaVo Spray: After each use and cleaning, unscrew the motor from the hose, cover it with a Cleanpac bag, and apply spray into the larger of the two tubes for one second using an appropriate cannula.
    • Care with KaVo SPRAYrotor: Similar to KaVo Spray, after each use and cleaning, unscrew the motor, place a matching care insert on the SPRAYrotor coupling, cover with a Cleanpac bag, and apply spray into the larger tube for one second.
    • Care with KaVo QUATTROcare: This is a cleaning and care unit with expansion pressure for effective cleaning and care. Refer to its specific instructions for use.
    • O-ring exchange: O-rings on the motor attachment should only be lubricated with a cotton ball wetted with KaVo Spray. Vaseline, oils, or other greases are not permitted. To replace, press O-rings between fingers to form a loop, slide them forwards, remove, then insert new O-rings into grooves, spray with KaVo Spray, and repeat the loop formation and sliding.
  • Storage: Reprocessed products should be stored protected from dust, with minimum exposure to germs, in a dry, dark, and cool space.

Warranty

KaVo provides a 12-month warranty from the invoice date for proper function and zero defects in material and processing. Justified complaints will result in free replacement or repair. The warranty excludes claims related to natural wear, improper handling, cleaning, maintenance, non-compliance with instructions, calcination, corrosion, contaminated air/water, or chemical/electrical factors. It typically does not cover lamps, light conductors, glassware, rubber parts, or plastic colorfastness. Liability is excluded for defects arising from unauthorized manipulations or changes to the product. Warranty claims require proof of purchase (invoice or delivery note) clearly showing the dealer, purchase date, type, and serial number.
