Overview

The Keenetic Hero 4G is an AC1300 Dual Band Mesh Wi-Fi 4G Modem Router designed for home and small office use, featuring a Dual Core CPU, a 5-Port Gigabit Smart Switch, and a USB Port. It functions as a central hub for internet connectivity, offering both mobile broadband and wired internet options, alongside robust Wi-Fi capabilities and smart switch functionalities.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Keenetic Hero 4G is to provide versatile internet access. It supports 4G mobile broadband connectivity via a Micro-SIM card slot, allowing users to access the internet using a cellular network. This makes it suitable for locations where wired internet is unavailable or as a backup connection. For wired internet, it includes a dedicated blue Network Port 0, preconfigured for internet connection, and four additional gray Network Ports (1, 2, 3, 4) that can be used for home devices or reconfigured for internet access.

The device also acts as a powerful Wi-Fi router, supporting dual-band AC1300 Wi-Fi. It features two fixed precision printed dipole Wi-Fi antennas with 5 dBi gain, ensuring broad wireless coverage. The Wi-Fi Control Button facilitates easy addition of extenders to a Keenetic Mesh Wi-Fi System or other WPS-compliant devices, simplifying network expansion.

A USB port is included for connecting compatible USB devices such as external hard drives, printers, and 3G/4G modems. This expands the router's functionality, allowing for network storage, shared printing, or additional mobile broadband options.

Usage Features:

Setting up the Keenetic Hero 4G is straightforward. Users first insert a standard Micro-SIM card into the designated slot, ensuring the gold contacts face downwards. If using a Nano-SIM, an adapter is required. The two removable 4G antennas are then installed and positioned vertically for optimal signal reception. The device should be placed in an open area within cable length of a power outlet. Once connected to power, the Status LED and Wi-Fi LED should illuminate, indicating readiness.

Initial configuration is typically done by connecting a mobile device to the Keenetic device via Wi-Fi using the default SSID and password found on the back label, or by scanning a QR code for automatic connection. Alternatively, a computer can be connected to any gray Ethernet port using the included Ethernet cable. An Initial Setup Wizard will guide users through the configuration process, accessible via my.keenetic.net if it doesn't appear automatically.

The device features several indicator LEDs for monitoring its status:

  • Status LED: Solid green for operation, blinking green for rebooting/updating, and rapid blinking for button presses.
  • Internet LED: Solid green for 4G or wired internet, solid orange for 3G internet, blinking green/orange for data warning on metered connections, and off for no internet.
  • Mobile Network LED: Solid green for good signal, blinking green for data limit warning, solid blue for weak signal, blinking blue for connecting, and solid red for invalid/missing SIM or incorrect PIN.
  • FN LED: By default, this indicates USB port status (on for ready, off for not ready). Its function can be changed in settings.
  • Wi-Fi LED: Solid green for enabled Wi-Fi, blinking green for data transfer, blinking slowly for WPS, and off for disabled Wi-Fi.

Buttons on the device offer quick control:

  • Reset Button: Restores factory settings and resets the administrator password when pressed and held until the Status LED blinks rapidly.
  • Wi-Fi Control Button: A single press starts a quick connection session for adding new devices. Pressing and holding for 3 seconds toggles Wi-Fi on/off. This button's function can also be customized.
  • Programmable FN Button: By default, this button safely removes drives connected to the USB port. Like the Wi-Fi Control Button, its function can be reassigned.

Maintenance Features:

The Keenetic Hero 4G is designed for continuous operation and does not require daily power cycling. For troubleshooting, a "Frequently Asked Questions" section in the manual addresses common issues such as inability to access the setup wizard or internet connectivity problems.

If the Initial Setup Wizard or Web Interface is inaccessible, users are advised to check connections, verify IP address settings, and reboot devices. For mobile broadband issues, checking SIM card status, PIN requirements, ISP service area, roaming permissions, and account credit are crucial. For wired internet problems, consulting the ISP for correct connection parameters (e.g., account login, password, MAC address) is recommended.

In case of a forgotten wireless password, the default password is on the back label. If changed, it can be retrieved or reset via my.keenetic.net or the Keenetic Mobile Application. For a forgotten Web Interface password, a factory reset is necessary.

To perform a factory reset, ensure the device is powered on, then press and hold the Reset Button until the Status LED blinks rapidly. Releasing the button will initiate a restart and restore original settings. After a factory reset, the internet connection will need to be reconfigured, and any extenders in a Mesh Wi-Fi System will need to be re-added.

Safety instructions emphasize indoor use only, ensuring vents are unblocked, and using only the supplied power adapter. The device should be kept away from water, excessive humidity, heat, and direct sunlight. It can be safely wall-mounted using two screws on a strong surface. The device and its power adapter contain no user-serviceable parts and should not be opened.
