Overview

The KICKER CXA660.5 is a versatile 5-channel amplifier designed to deliver high-quality audio performance for car audio systems. It is part of the CX.5-Series, known for its robust power output and flexible configuration options. This amplifier is capable of driving both full-range speakers and a subwoofer, making it a comprehensive solution for enhancing in-car sound.

Function Description

The CXA660.5 amplifier serves to boost the audio signal from a car's head unit, providing more power to speakers and subwoofers than the head unit alone can supply. It features four full-range channels (AMP1 and AMP2) and one dedicated subwoofer channel (SUB), allowing for a 4-channel speaker setup with an additional subwoofer. The amplifier supports both low-level (RCA) and high-level (speaker wire) inputs, offering compatibility with a wide range of head units, including factory systems without RCA outputs.

Key operational features include:

  • Automatic Turn-On: The CX.5 series offers two automatic turn-on modes: +12V and DC Offset. The +12V mode uses a remote turn-on wire from the head unit, while the DC Offset mode detects a >2.5V DC offset from the Hi-Level speaker outputs when the source unit is turned on.
  • Input Level: The amplifier accepts RCA inputs for low-level signals or speaker-level inputs for high-level signals. An input level switch allows selection between HI (high-level) and LO (low-level) inputs.
  • Fader Switch: This switch allows the user to run two sets of inputs (front and rear for example) to the amplifier. If only one source unit is used, the fader switch should be set to OFF.
  • Sub Input: If a dedicated subwoofer output is not available from the source unit, the SUB INPUT switch can be used to select between SUB INPUT or AMP INPUT 2, allowing the subwoofer channel to receive its signal from the main amplifier inputs.
  • Input Gain Control: Each input channel (AMP1, AMP2, and SUB) has an independent gain control. This feature allows users to match the amplifier's output to the source unit's input level, preventing distortion and maximizing dynamic range. The gain control is crucial for setting the amplifier's maximum unclipped output.
  • Crossover Control: The amplifier features variable crossovers for both the full-range channels and the subwoofer channel. The full-range channels (AMP1 & 2) can be configured for high-pass filtering (HPF) with a variable frequency range of 10–200 Hz. The subwoofer channel (SUB) can be configured for low-pass filtering (LPF) with a variable frequency range of 50–200 Hz. This allows for precise frequency distribution to the speakers and subwoofer, optimizing sound quality and protecting speakers from unwanted frequencies.
  • Bass Boost Control: The variable bass boost control on the subwoofer channel allows for an adjustable boost of 0–6dB at 40 Hz, enhancing low-frequency impact.
  • Remote Bass Control (CXARC): An optional remote bass control (KICKER CXARC) can be connected to the amplifier, allowing for convenient adjustment of the subwoofer output level from the driver's seat. This feature is particularly useful for fine-tuning bass response on the fly.

Usage Features

The CXA660.5 is designed for ease of installation and flexible use in various car audio setups.

Installation:

  • Mounting: The amplifier should be mounted in a location that allows at least 4 inches (10cm) of open ventilation. It is recommended to choose a structurally sound location, such as in the climate-controlled passenger compartment. Four 3mm holes should be drilled, and the supplied #8 screws used to mount the amplifier. Vertical mounting is also possible by removing the end panel, inserting the brackets, and then tightening the double-slotted brackets.
  • Wiring: Proper wiring is critical for optimal performance and safety.
    • Ground Wire: A 24-inch (60cm) or less, paint-and-corrosion-free, solid, bare-metal chassis ground connection is recommended. The ground wire should be the same gauge (or larger) as the positive battery wire.
    • Power Wire: A fuse holder should be installed within 18 inches (45cm) of the battery and in-line with the power cable connected to the amplifier. If the amplifier needs to be removed, the ground wire should be disconnected first.
    • RCA Inputs: The CX amplifier features dual differential RCA inputs, which can receive either high or low-level signals. For high-level signals, the amplifier's input level switch should be set to "HI". For low-level signals, the switch should be set to "LO".
    • KICKER KISL (Optional): For head units without RCA outputs, the KICKER KISL can be used to convert speaker-level outputs to RCA signals, which are then fed into the amplifier.
  • Multi-Amplifier Installations: For systems with multiple amplifiers, distribution blocks are used to provide power. Each amplifier should have its own fuse, and the distribution block should be fused within 18 inches (45cm) of the battery. The main battery cable should also be fused between the battery and distribution block.

Operation:

  • Setting Gain: The input gain control is not a volume control; it matches the output of the source unit to the input level of the amplifier. This is done by turning the gain knob completely off (counterclockwise), then slowly turning it up (clockwise) until audible distortion is heard, then backing off slightly. Using a voltmeter or oscilloscope is recommended for precise gain setting.
  • Crossover Adjustment: The variable crossovers allow users to tailor the frequency response for each set of speakers. For full-range speakers, a high-pass filter prevents low frequencies from reaching them, improving clarity. For the subwoofer, a low-pass filter ensures only bass frequencies are reproduced.
  • Subsonic Filter: The fixed 25Hz subsonic filter on the subwoofer channel helps protect the subwoofer from playing ultra-low frequencies that can cause damage or reduce sound quality.
  • Speaker Configuration: The amplifier supports various speaker configurations, including 4-channel operation with a subwoofer (minimum impedance of 2 ohms per channel for AMP1, AMP2, and SUB channels).

Maintenance Features

KICKER amplifiers are designed for reliability and durability, with features that aid in troubleshooting and long-term performance.

Troubleshooting:

  • LED Indicators: The CX.5 series amplifiers feature LED indicators on the side panel for Power (PWR) and Protection (PRT).
    • Green LED: A green LED indicates the amplifier is turned on and operating normally.
    • Red LED: A red LED indicates a protection circuit engagement, which can be triggered by low battery voltage, short circuits, thermal issues, or an input voltage that is too high.
    • Red LED (flashing): A flashing red LED indicates low battery voltage (below 10.8V).
  • Common Issues: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common problems such as no output, distorted output, no power, and blown fuses. It recommends checking power and ground connections, RCA connections, speaker outputs, and the vehicle's charging system.
  • Overheating Protection: The amplifier has a thermal protection circuit that will shut down the amplifier if it overheats. This is indicated by a red LED.
  • Short Circuit Protection: The amplifier is protected against short circuits in the speaker outputs, which will also trigger the protection circuit and illuminate the red LED.

Warranty and Support:

  • KICKER amplifiers come with a three-year warranty when purchased from an authorized KICKER dealer and installed by a KICKER Installation Kit. Otherwise, a one-year warranty applies.
  • KICKER provides customer support and technical assistance through their website (www.kicker.com) and customer service department. They offer resources like FAQs, technical support, and product registration.
  • The manual emphasizes the importance of using genuine KICKER accessories and wiring for optimal performance and to ensure warranty validity.

In summary, the KICKER CXA660.5 is a powerful and flexible 5-channel amplifier that offers a complete solution for upgrading a car's audio system. Its robust power output, versatile input options, comprehensive crossover controls, and built-in protection features make it a reliable choice for audiophiles seeking enhanced sound quality and performance.
