18.3 Changing the engine oil and oil filter, cleaning the oil screens x
Warning
Danger of scalding Engine oil and gear oil get very hot when the motorcycle is ridden.
– Wear appropriate protective clothing and safety gloves. In case of burns, rinse immediately with lukewarm water.

Environmental hazard Hazardous substances cause environmental damage.
– Oil, grease, filters, fuel, cleaners, brake fluid, etc., should be disposed of as stipulated in applicable regulations.

Drain the engine oil only when the engine is warm.
Preparatory work
(EXC SIX DAYS, EXC AUS)
– Remove the engine guard. ( p. 80)
– Park the motorcycle on a level surface.

Main work
– Place a suitable container under the engine.
– Remove oil drain plug 1 with the magnet and seal ring.

– Remove screw plug 2 with the gear oil screen and the O-rings.

Do not remove screw A.

– Remove screw plug 3 with engine oil screen 4 and the O-rings.
– Completely drain the engine oil.
– Thoroughly clean the parts and sealing surfaces.

– Mount and tighten screw plug 2 with the gear oil screen and the O-rings.

Screw plug, gear oil screen M20x1.5 15 Nm
(11.1 lbf ft)
