Overview

The La Crosse Technology Digital Atomic Wall Clock (Model: WT-8005U) is a versatile timekeeping device designed for home use, offering precise time, date, and indoor temperature readings, along with alarm functionality. This clock is radio-controlled, meaning it automatically synchronizes with the WWVB atomic time signal for accuracy, eliminating the need for manual time adjustments.

Function Description

At its core, the WT-8005U serves as a digital wall clock that displays the current time in a large, easy-to-read format. Beyond basic timekeeping, it integrates an alarm function, allowing users to set a specific wake-up time. The clock also provides indoor temperature readings, displayed in either Fahrenheit or Celsius, giving users immediate environmental information. A calendar function shows the month, date, and day of the week, ensuring comprehensive time and date awareness. The atomic clock feature is a significant advantage, as it automatically receives the WWVB radio signal to maintain accurate time, including automatic adjustments for Daylight Saving Time (DST).

Usage Features

Setting up the clock begins with inserting two fresh AA, LR6 1.5 volt Alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity. If the indoor temperature doesn't display within 60 seconds, a restart procedure is recommended: remove batteries, press any button 20 times, wait 15 minutes, and then reinsert the batteries.

The clock offers intuitive controls for various settings. The SET button is central to configuring time and date. Pressing SET allows users to cycle through and adjust the 12/24-hour format, hour, minutes, year, month, date, and Daylight Saving Indicator. Adjustments are made using the or buttons. To exit the time setting mode, users can press SET again or simply wait 30 seconds for the clock to return to the normal display.

For time zone selection, the ZONE button is used. Options include Pacific (P), Mountain (M), Central (C), and Eastern (E). The clock also allows users to switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius for temperature display using the °F/°C button, catering to individual preferences.

The alarm function is managed with the ALARM button. To set the alarm time, users hold the ALARM button, then use the or buttons to adjust the hour and minutes. Pressing ALARM again confirms the settings and moves to the next item. Exiting the alarm setting mode is similar to time setting: press ALARM or wait 30 seconds. The alarm can be easily activated or deactivated by pressing ALARM once. When activated, an alarm icon appears; it disappears when deactivated.

When an alarm sounds, the SNOOZE button can be pressed to silence it for 5 minutes, during which the alarm icon will flash. The alarm itself is a crescendo alarm, meaning its volume gradually increases over 120 seconds if not deactivated. Pressing any button other than SNOOZE will stop the alarm for 24 hours.

The atomic time synchronization is a key feature. The clock will automatically search for the WWVB time signal for one hour between midnight and 6 AM until a signal is received. After successful reception, it will only search for the atomic signal after midnight. Users can manually initiate a search for the WWVB time signal by pressing the WWVB SEARCH button. During the search, the WWVB icon will flash.

Should the clock's display appear distorted or if it becomes unresponsive, a RESET button is provided. Using a pen or paperclip to press this button once will restore the clock to its default settings. The clock also features foldout stands, allowing it to be placed on a flat surface in addition to being wall-mounted.

Maintenance Features

Maintaining the WT-8005U primarily involves proper battery management. The manual emphasizes several important guidelines:

  • Do not mix old and new batteries. This prevents uneven discharge and potential damage.
  • Do not mix Alkaline, Standard, Lithium, or Rechargeable Batteries. Using different battery types together can lead to performance issues or leakage.
  • Always purchase the correct size and grade of battery most suitable for the intended use.
  • Replace all batteries of a set at the same time. This ensures consistent power delivery.
  • Clean the battery contacts and those of the device prior to battery installation to ensure good electrical connection.
  • Ensure the batteries are installed with correct polarity (+ and -) to prevent damage.
  • Remove batteries from equipment that is not to be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and corrosion.
  • Remove used batteries promptly to avoid leakage.
  • Do not expose the clock to extreme temperature, vibration, or shock. These conditions can damage the internal components.
  • Clean the clock with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using solvents, which can damage the display or casing.

The product is not intended as a toy and should be kept out of reach of children. It is designed for home use only and not for medical or public information purposes. The manufacturer also notes that improper use or unauthorized opening of the housing voids the warranty. These guidelines ensure the longevity and optimal performance of the atomic wall clock.
