The Land Pride GS05 Series Grading Scrapers are implements designed for landscaping, hobby farms, and small estates, offering a user-friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional road grading applications. Unlike box scrapers, these grading scrapers are not intended for transferring large volumes of dirt over long distances, thus requiring less horsepower and eliminating the need for constant manipulation of the tractor's 3-point lift controls to maintain grade.
The primary function of the GS05 Series Grading Scraper is to effectively grade and level surfaces. When properly adjusted and driven forward, the scraper works by shaving off high spots and filling in ruts and low spots on unimproved roads and lanes. The design allows for dirt or aggregate material to build up in front of and between the blades, facilitating a uniform flow of material over the leveling scraper blades. Should a significant accumulation of soil or aggregate occur, a slight raise of the tractor's lift controls will allow the excess material to flow out evenly.
The implement requires a Category I 3-point hitch for attachment to a tractor. The lower 3-point arms of the hitch must be stabilized to prevent side-to-side movement, which can be achieved using sway blocks or adjustable chains on most tractors. The scraper is designed to be leveled from left to right and front to back for optimal performance. This involves manually adjusting one of the lower lift arms and the top-center-link of the tractor's 3-point hitch.
Scarifier shanks are an integral part of the grading scraper, designed to break up hard-packed surfaces when the blades alone are insufficient. These shanks have three height settings, allowing the operator to adjust their depth to achieve the desired cultivation and grading action. The shank depth is measured from the bottom edge of the skid shoes to the bottom edge of the shank tips, offering settings such as 3 3/4" (9.5 cm) below skid shoes, 1 1/2" (3.8 cm) below skid shoes, and 1/2" (1.3 cm) above skid shoes.
The grading scraper also features reversible heat-treated, high-carbon steel grading blades. These blades have two cutting edges, allowing them to be unbolted and turned over when one edge wears out, extending their service life.
The GS05 Series Grading Scrapers are designed for ease of use. Once properly attached and leveled, operators can simply lower the scraper until the skid shoes are firmly in contact with the ground and begin driving forward. The scraper's design minimizes the need for continuous adjustments during operation, making it user-friendly even for those with less experience.
For enhanced versatility, an optional set of rear-mounted grader blades can be purchased and attached to the back of the scraper. This allows the implement to be used effectively both when traveling forward and when backing up, providing greater flexibility in grading tasks.
Safety is a paramount consideration in the design and operation of the grading scraper. Operators are advised to read the entire manual before use, paying close attention to safety information, assembly, adjustments, operating instructions, and maintenance. Key safety practices include keeping bystanders away, never allowing riders on the implement or tractor, and always shutting down the tractor properly before dismounting or performing any maintenance. The manual emphasizes the importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE) and being aware of potential hazards such as high-pressure fluids and crystalline silica dust.
When transporting the grading scraper on roadways, operators must comply with federal, state, and local laws. This includes using accessory lights, clean reflectors, and a slow-moving vehicle (SMV) sign to ensure visibility. The implement should not block the tractor's SMV sign, and if it does, an additional SMV sign should be installed on the implement. Ground speed should be selected to allow adequate control of steering and stopping, with a maximum transport speed of 20 mph (32 km/h) for attached equipment, and slower speeds for rough or hilly terrain.
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of the Land Pride GS05 Series Grading Scrapers. After several hours of use, all bolts should be checked and tightened to the specified torque values. Any worn, damaged, or illegible safety labels must be replaced with new ones, which can be ordered from a Land Pride dealer.
The grader blades are wear items and should be inspected periodically. When the bottom edges wear out, the blades can be unbolted, turned over to use the second cutting edge, and reattached. Plow bolts and flange nuts should also be inspected for wear and replaced as needed, with flange nuts torqued to 150 ft-lbs. When both cutting edges are worn, the grader blades should be replaced entirely.
Shank tips are also removable wear items. They can be removed by heating the dimpled area on both sides and knocking them off the shank body with a blunt punch. New shank tips are installed by dimpling them with a punch after placement on the shank body.
Skid shoes should be inspected at the beginning of each season and replaced when their material thickness is less than 1/8" (3 mm). The skid shoes can be reversed to extend their wear life if one end wears faster than the other. Replacement involves raising the scraper, supporting it on blocks, removing the hex whiz nuts and plow bolts, turning or replacing the skid shoe, and then reattaching and torquing the nuts to 31 ft-lbs.
For long-term storage, the implement should be cleaned, inspected, and serviced. This includes scraping off compacted dirt, washing surfaces, checking frames and plow bolts for wear, and replacing any loose, damaged, or worn parts with genuine Land Pride parts. Repainting areas where paint is worn or scratched helps prevent rust. A light coating of oil or grease can be applied to lower frames, grader blades, and inside side panels to minimize oxidation. All damaged or missing decals should be replaced. Finally, the grading scraper should be stored on a level surface in a clean, dry place to reduce maintenance needs and extend its life.
