With strong contrasts between light and dark sec-
tions, the exposure latitude of film is no longer
sufficient to register all the subject’s differences
in brightness in both the "light” and the "sha-
dows”. The decision is left to the photographer as
to which sections he wants to emphasize. For ex-
ample, a person can then appear as a dark silhou-
ette (underexposed) in front of a correctly ex-
posed landscape or correctly exposed in front of a
"bleached” background (overexposed).
Taking a measurement for "light” and "shadows”
and using a compromise exposure calculated
from the two normally leads to unsatisfactory re-
sults, because some differences are lost in both
the light and the dark sections.
Deliberately low or deliberately generous expo-
sures often increase the character of a picture
and can therefore be effectively used as a compo-
sition tool.
