If you start the installation DVD image from an external USB device or if your computer has an NVM
Express drive installed, do additional configurations before you start. For more information, go to
http://www.lenovo.com/support/installwin7viausb3.
If an NVM Express drive is installed, additional drivers also are required. For more information, go to
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2990941.
9. Restore the folder at C:\SWTOOLS that you backed up.
10. Install the device drivers. See “Installing device drivers” on page 51.
11. Install the Windows 7 fix modules. You can find the Windows 7 fix modules at C:\SWTOOLS\OSFIXES\. For
more information, go to the Microsoft Knowledge Base home page at
http://support.microsoft.com/.
12. Install the registry patches, for example, the Enabling Wake on LAN from Standby for ENERGY STAR
patch. To download and install the registry patches, go to the Lenovo Support Web site at
http://
www.lenovo.com/support
.
Note: After installing the operating system, do not change the initial UEFI/Legacy Boot setting in the
ThinkPad Setup program. Otherwise the operating system will not start correctly.
When you install the Windows 7 operating system, you might need one of the following country or region
codes:

Installing the Windows 10 operating system
Before you start, print these instructions.
Attention: The process of installing a new operating system deletes all the data on your internal storage
drive, including the data that were stored in a hidden folder.
To install the Windows 10 operating system, do the following:
1. Ensure that you set the security chip to TPM 2.0. For more information, see “Setting the security chip”
on page 45.
2. For computer models that support the Intel
®
Optane technology, start the ThinkPad Setup program and
select Config Storage Controller Mode. Ensure that RST mode is selected.
3. Connect the drive that contains the operating system installation program to the computer.
4. Start the ThinkPad Setup program. See “Configuring ThinkPad Setup” on page 52.
5. Select Startup Boot to display the Boot Priority Order submenu.
6. Select the drive that contains the operating system installation program, for example, USB HDD. Then
press Esc.
7. Select Restart and ensure that OS Optimized Defaults is enabled. Then press F10 to save the settings
and exit the ThinkPad Setup program.
