Why Lincoln Electric SAM400 has loss of output in both modes of operation?
    • R
      richard02Jul 30, 2025
If your Lincoln Electric Welding System experiences a loss of output in both constant and variable voltage modes, test the alternator rotor voltage from lead #222 to #1. If rotor voltage is present, proceed to step 9. If there's no rotor voltage: lightly sand slip rings and reseat brushes. Then, flash rotor fields by turning the machine off, using a 12 to 24 volt battery, and applying voltage for 15 seconds with the negative lead to #1 and the positive lead to #222 at the alternator terminal strip.

What to do if Lincoln Electric SAM400 output is low in both modes?
    • J
      jeffreyweeksAug 8, 2025
If the Lincoln Electric Welding System has low output in both constant voltage (CV) and variable voltage (VV) positions, begin by testing the rotor voltage. If it's less than 80-90 volts DC, check diodes D1, D2, D5, and D6, inspect the SCR Bridge, and verify the resistance of the rotor fields (normal value is about 14 ohms).

Why Lincoln Electric SAM400 Welding System has loss of output in one mode only?
    • P
      prothNov 17, 2025
If your Lincoln Electric Welding System loses output in only one mode (either constant or variable voltage), check the following: * Test for a shorted diode on the Three Phase Bridge by checking diodes D7, D8, D9, D10, and D11. * Test for failure of Control Board #2. To do this: a) Turn the machine off. b) Put the toggle switch in the affected mode. c) Remove Control Board #2. d) Turn the voltage control and portable field control to minimum. e) Start the machine. f) If the generator builds up, install a new Control Board #2. If it doesn't, proceed to the next step. * Test for a defective toggle switch, rheostat, or open circuit. To do this: a) Turn the machine off. b) Remove Control Board #1. c) Put the toggle switch in the affected mode. d) Turn the voltage control to maximum. e)...
