The FlowMaster II rotary driven 24 V electric pump, series "A", is a robust and versatile lubrication pump designed for centralized lubrication systems. It is engineered to pump and dispense lubricants using electric power, making it suitable for various industrial applications. The pump is available in several models (85736, 85737, 85738, 85739, 85740) with different lubricant capacities, ranging from 5 US gallons (18 liters) to 400 lbs (181 kg), accommodating a wide range of operational needs.
Function Description:
The FlowMaster II pump utilizes a 24 V electric motor and either a single or two-stage planetary gear drive. Its primary function is to deliver grease proportionally to the pump's revolutions per minute. The pump's design incorporates an eccentric crank mechanism that converts the motor's rotary motion into reciprocating motion, causing the pump cylinder to move up and down. This results in a positive displacement, double-acting operation, where grease is discharged during both the up and down strokes.
During the downstroke, the pump cylinder extends into the grease, and through a combination of shovel action and vacuum generated in the pump cylinder chamber, grease is forced into the cylinder. Simultaneously, grease is discharged through the pump's outlet. The volume of grease taken in during intake is twice the amount of grease output during one complete cycle. In the upstroke, the inlet check closes, and half of the grease taken in during the previous stroke is transferred through the outlet check and discharged to the outlet port.
The pump motor features an integral speed control, allowing the pump speed to be reduced to 10% of its maximum value. This speed control is factory-set to maximum but can be adjusted in the field. The pump is designed for use in various centralized lubrication systems, including single-line parallel, single-line progressive, and two-line systems.
Important Technical Specifications:
- Operating Voltage: 24 V (minimum 18 V, maximum 32 V).
- Motor Power: 1/3 HP (0.25 kW).
- Operating Temperature: -40 to 150 °F (-40 to 65 °C).
- Output/Pump Cycle: 0.07 in³ (1.15 cm³).
- Pump Outlets: 1/4 NPTF internal.
- Gear Ratio: 19:1 (2-stage).
- Current Draw: Varies with backpressure and r/min. For example, at 80 °F (27 °C) and 100 r/min, the current draw is 7 in³/min (114 cm³/min). At 0 psi (0 bar) and 105 r/min, it draws 1.28 A, while at 5000 psi (344 bar) and 96 r/min, it draws 6.47 A. A 10 A fuse is recommended for motor protection.
- Dimensions: The pump's overall dimensions vary by model due to different housing tube lengths. For instance, model 85736 has a dimension "A" of 13.74 in (349 mm) and "B" of 22.67 in (576 mm), while model 85739 has "A" of 34.06 in (865 mm) and "B" of 42.99 in (1092 mm). The pump head itself measures approximately 9.13 in (232 mm) in height and 5.84 in (148 mm) in width.
Usage Features:
- Installation: The pump should be securely mounted on a drum cover to prevent movement or vibration during operation. Material supply lines are connected to the pump outlet, and a safety unloader should be installed in an open outlet port. A high-pressure shut-off valve is required in the material supply line.
- Wiring: The pump motor and vent valve (if used) require specific wiring. The red motor lead must be connected to the positive side of the circuit, as the motor is polarity sensitive and will not operate if improperly wired.
- Priming: Before initial operation, the pump must be primed. This involves removing the pump outlet line, energizing the pump with a full lubricant container, purging air, and verifying even lubricant flow before reattaching the outlet line.
- Speed Adjustment: The pump speed can be adjusted by turning a hex socket head cover screw. Counter-clockwise rotation reduces pump speed. It's important not to reduce the pump speed below 20 r/min, and the adjustment screw has 30 turns with no stop.
- Lubricant Compatibility: The pump is designed for lubricants. Users must always read and follow fluid manufacturer's recommendations regarding fluid compatibility.
- Safety: The equipment generates very high grease pressure, requiring extreme caution during operation. Material leaks from loose or ruptured components can inject fluid through the skin, necessitating immediate medical attention. Personal protection is essential to prevent splashing. The power source must always be disconnected when the pump is not in use.
Maintenance Features:
- Crankcase Oil Service:
- Oil Level Check: Every 750 hours of machine operation or monthly.
- Oil Change: Every 2000 hours of machine operation or annually.
- Oil Type: SAE 10W30 motor oil for ambient temperatures of -40 to 150 °F (-40 to 65 °C). For colder temperatures (-70 to 50 °F / -56 to 10 °C), Mobil Aero HFA low-temperature oil is recommended.
- Oil Volume: 15 oz (0.44 l) of 10W30 motor oil. The oil level should be at the indicating dot on the dipstick.
- Inspection: Annual inspection by a factory-authorized warranty and service center is recommended. If overpressurizing is suspected, the pump should be inspected by authorized personnel.
- Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues such as the pump not running, erratic speeds, low output, seepage, noise, and failure to build pressure. This includes possible causes and corrective actions, such as disassembling and repairing damaged parts, checking wiring, refilling reservoirs, replacing worn components, and clearing foreign material.
- Repair: Specialized equipment and knowledge are required for pump repair. Any pump that appears damaged, badly worn, or operating abnormally should be removed from service and sent to an authorized service center.
- Disassembly and Assembly: Detailed instructions are provided for disassembling and assembling various pump components, including the pump body, crank rod and eccentric, and reciprocating tube. This includes specific torque values for screws and nuts, as well as recommendations for applying Loctite to threads. Special tools may be required for certain procedures, such as removing the plunger link rod.
