Overview

This document describes the Little Giant Model 1-EA-42 Small Submersible Encapsulated Pump, a device designed for reliable liquid transfer in various applications. The pump is engineered for durability and ease of use, suitable for both submersible and in-line operations. Its robust construction and encapsulated design contribute to its longevity and consistent performance.

Function Description

The Little Giant Model 1-EA-42 is a small, submersible, encapsulated pump primarily designed for moving liquids. It can operate either fully submerged in the liquid or in an in-line configuration, where it is connected to a piping system. The pump's core function is to draw liquid from an inlet and discharge it through an outlet, facilitating circulation, drainage, or transfer tasks. Its epoxy-encapsulated motor and internal components are protected from the pumped fluid, enhancing its lifespan and reliability, especially in continuous operation. The pump is designed to handle liquids compatible with its component materials, making it versatile for various non-corrosive fluid applications. It is crucial to ensure that the pump is used only with appropriate liquids to prevent damage to its internal mechanisms and maintain its operational integrity. The pump's design allows for flexible positioning, though it is generally recommended to orient the volute (pump head) downwards or to the side for optimal performance. When used in-line, it is imperative that the pump head is flooded with the liquid before starting to prevent dry running and potential damage. The pump's ability to operate in different attitudes provides flexibility in installation, accommodating various setup requirements. It is equipped with a grounding conductor and a grounding-type attachment plug to ensure electrical safety, reducing the risk of electric shock. The National Electric Code (NEC) mandates the use of a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) for branch circuits supplying fountain equipment, pools, and similar installations, which is a critical safety measure when operating this pump.

Usage Features

The Little Giant Model 1-EA-42 pump offers several features that enhance its usability and performance. Its compact size and encapsulated design make it suitable for applications where space is limited or where a sealed unit is preferred for safety and durability. The pump's outer casing is constructed from die-cast aluminum and polyester, providing a sturdy and corrosion-resistant exterior. The internal components are encased in a heat-transfer epoxy, which helps dissipate heat and protect the motor from the surrounding environment. This encapsulation allows the pump to be fully submerged without compromising its electrical integrity. For in-line applications, the pump can be integrated into a piping system, provided that the pump head is flooded with liquid before operation. This ensures that the pump does not run dry, which can lead to damage to the seal and motor. The pump features two mounting holes on its back, designed to accept #8 self-tapping screws for secure installation. These holes have a specific depth of 0.37 inches, which should not be exceeded to prevent damage. Proper support for the pump and its piping is essential during and after installation to prevent undue stress on the discharge connection and potential damage to the unit. The pump's intake side should never be restricted, as this can starve the pump of fluid, leading to seal damage and reduced performance. If reduced flow rates are desired, a valve should be placed on the discharge side of the pump, or a clamp can be used on flexible vinyl tubing to restrict the flow. Operating the pump dry is strictly prohibited, as it relies on the pumped fluid for cooling. Dry running can quickly damage the seal and cause the motor to fail. If the pump is to be idle for an extended period, it should be cleaned according to the maintenance instructions and protected from freezing temperatures. Freezing can cause cracking or distortion of the unit, rendering it inoperable. The pump is supplied with a 3-prong electrical plug, and it is critical not to remove the third grounding prong, as this is a safety feature to prevent electrical shock and will void the warranty. Users must always verify that the pump's voltage requirements, as indicated on the label, match the power supply to prevent electrical damage.

Maintenance Features

Maintaining the Little Giant Model 1-EA-42 pump is straightforward, focusing on ensuring its longevity and efficient operation. The pump is permanently lubricated, meaning that no external oiling is required throughout its lifespan. Users should never attempt to open the sealed portion of the unit or remove housing screws, as this can compromise the encapsulation and void the warranty. Regular cleaning of the pump parts is crucial for prolonging its life and maintaining its efficiency. Before any maintenance or service, it is paramount to disconnect the unit from the power source to prevent accidental startup and electrical hazards. The power cord should be regularly inspected for any nicks or cuts, as damage to the cord can pose a safety risk and affect pump performance. The maintenance procedure involves removing the screen (if present) and three specific screws to access the impeller. Other screws should not be removed. Once the impeller is accessible, any corrosion or debris that may clog it should be lightly cleaned using a brush and penetrating oil. Encased material can be gently scraped away. After cleaning, the impeller should be turned by hand to ensure it rotates freely. The pump should then be placed in a way that the pump and impeller do not touch anything, and the unit should be plugged into a GFCI circuit for approximately 10 seconds to check if the impeller turns. If the impeller rotates and the GFCI does not trip, the unit can be unplugged, and parts reinstalled in reverse order. However, if the impeller does not rotate, if the unit trips circuit breakers, or if it otherwise operates improperly, the unit should be unplugged and returned to Little Giant or an authorized service center for repair. Users should not attempt to repair the unit themselves in such cases. This structured approach to maintenance ensures that the pump remains in optimal working condition and helps identify potential issues before they lead to significant damage.
