2.2.3 How to detect a loss of isolation of the cable splice
For this test the splicing needs to be separated from the motor cable and submersible
cable. Please keep additionally 5 to 10 cm of the submersible cable and remove the
isolation of all four wires. On motor side, cut the cable
directly below the splice. Make sure that each wire on both
side is separated and not touching each other as shown in the
picture (left-hand side).
Before performing the electrical test, it is important to make a
detailed visible investigation on the outer shrinking sleeve.
Afterwards, perform the electrical test which is shown in the following steps:
• Configure your isolation measuring
device:
o Choose isolation –
measurement at 1000 V
o Insert the measuring tips into
the provided sockets (black to
COM and red to Ω)
• The measurement is easier and safer by
using crocodile clips
• Check the isolation by connecting the
measuring clips to
different wires:
o L1-L2
o L1-L3
o L1-GND
o L2-L3
o L2-GND
o L3-GND
There should be no value below 0.5 MΩ. Generally, this test can also be done to test the isolation of
the submersible cable.
