Do you have a question about the Lutron Electronics LOS-CDT Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Lutron LOS-CDT Series is a line of dual-technology ceiling-mount occupancy sensors designed for integration into Lutron lighting control systems or for stand-alone operation with a Lutron power pack. These sensors are engineered to eliminate the need for manual sensitivity and timer adjustments, simplifying installation and ensuring consistent performance over time.

Function Description

The core function of the LOS-CDT Series sensors is to detect occupancy in a space and control lighting accordingly. They achieve this through a combination of two sensing technologies: Ultrasonic (US) and Passive Infrared (PIR). Ultrasonic technology provides maximum sensitivity, detecting motion through sound waves, while Passive Infrared technology detects changes in heat signatures, offering high noise immunity and excellent false tripping immunity. By combining these two technologies, the sensors can accurately determine occupancy, even in complex environments that might challenge single-technology sensors.

When integrated with a Lutron system, the LOS-CDT sensors can either turn lights completely off or dim them to a preset level when the space becomes unoccupied. For stand-alone applications, they control lighting through a power pack. The "R" models (LOS-CDT-500R-WH, LOS-CDT-1000R-WH, LOS-CDT-2000R-WH) also include a photo cell feature, which prevents lights from turning on if there is sufficient natural light in the room, contributing to energy savings. These models also feature an isolated relay for contact rating.

The sensors are designed for ceiling mounting, with different models offering various coverage areas and fields of view. The LOS-CDT-500 models cover 500 ft² (46 m²) with a 180° field of view, while the LOS-CDT-1000 models cover 1000 ft² (93 m²) with a 180° field of view. The LOS-CDT-2000 models provide a larger coverage of 2000 ft² (186 m²) with a 360° field of view. They are suitable for mounting on ceilings between 8 ft and 12 ft (2.4 m to 3.7 m) high.

Usage Features

The LOS-CDT Series offers several features that enhance its usability and adaptability to different environments:

  • Intelligent, Continually Adapting Sensor: The sensors are equipped with a self-adapting internal microprocessor. This microprocessor analyzes the composite signals from both US and PIR technologies to eliminate the need for time-consuming manual adjustments during installation and throughout the product's lifespan. This intelligence allows the sensor to continuously optimize its settings for the specific space it occupies.
  • Dual Technology Sensing: The combination of Ultrasonic and Passive Infrared sensing provides a robust detection mechanism. US motion detection offers high sensitivity, crucial for detecting subtle movements, while PIR motion detection provides strong immunity against false triggers caused by environmental factors like air currents. This makes the sensors highly effective in complex environments that might be difficult to control with single-technology sensors.
  • Snap-locks to Ceiling-Mounted Cover Plate: This design feature simplifies the physical installation process, allowing the sensor to be securely attached to its cover plate with ease.
  • Non-Volatile Memory: All settings configured for the sensor are saved in protected memory. This ensures that the settings are not lost during power outages, maintaining consistent operation without the need for re-configuration.
  • Adaptive Functions:
    • Installation Learning (60 minutes): Upon initial installation, the sensor undergoes a 60-minute learning period to adapt to its environment.
    • Long-term Learning (4 weeks): Over a period of four weeks, the sensor continues to learn and adapt to error conditions, air current patterns, and optimizes its timer settings for the specific space.
    • Post-Learning Occupancy Periods: After the learning phase, the sensor establishes 24-hour circadian occupancy periods and weekly occupancy periods, further refining its detection capabilities.
    • Adjustments in Post-Learning Period: The sensor adjusts its sensitivity based on occupancy patterns. During generally occupied periods, it operates in a high-sensitivity mode. During generally unoccupied periods, it switches to a "miser mode" to conserve energy.
  • Timer Adjustment Modes:
    • Automatic Mode: The sensor continually adapts its timer settings to the space, automatically optimizing the time lights remain on after occupancy is no longer detected.
    • Manual Mode: Users can manually set the timer for 8 to 30 minutes.
    • Test Mode: An 8-second test mode is available for quick verification of sensor operation during installation.
  • LED Lamp Indicators: The sensor includes LED indicators to provide visual feedback on its operation:
    • A red LED indicates infrared motion detection.
    • A green LED indicates ultrasonic motion detection.
  • Photo Cell (R Models only): For "R" models, the integrated photo cell prevents lights from turning on if there is sufficient natural light, further enhancing energy efficiency. The sensitivity of the photo cell is adjustable from 0 lx to 1000 lx.
  • Wiring Options: The sensors can be wired for system control, integrating with various Lutron lighting control systems like Digital microWATT™, EcoSystem®, Energi Savr Node™, GRAFIK 5000™/6000™/7000™, GRAFIK Eye® 3000/4000, GRAFIK Eye® QS, HomeWorks®, HomeWorks® QS, LCP128™, microWATT®, Quantum®, RadioRA®, RadioRA® 2, and Softswitch128®. They can also be wired for stand-alone control with a power pack, supporting up to three occupancy sensors per power pack.
  • Relay Model Option (R Models only): These models offer additional wiring options for relay control, including normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) contacts, allowing for flexible integration with other systems. The gray wire logic with photo cell active provides specific control over lights turning on or remaining off based on light levels and occupancy.
  • Infrared Masking: The sensor can be customized with infrared masks to block its view in specific areas. This is useful for preventing detection in unwanted zones, such as doorways leading to hallways, or for creating specific detection patterns like conference room, 180°, full, rectangular, or over-the-door masks.

Maintenance Features

The LOS-CDT Series is designed for minimal maintenance, primarily due to its self-adaptive nature:

  • Self-Adapting Microprocessor: The internal microprocessor continuously analyzes and adjusts the sensor's settings, eliminating the need for manual sensitivity and timer adjustments that would typically be required for non-intelligent sensors. This significantly reduces the ongoing maintenance burden.
  • Non-Volatile Memory: The retention of settings during power outages means that once configured, the sensor will resume operation with its saved parameters without requiring re-programming after a power interruption.
  • Robust Housing: The sensor features rugged, high-impact, injection-molded plastic housing, designed for durability and longevity in various indoor environments.
  • Simplified Troubleshooting with LED Indicators: The red and green LED indicators provide immediate visual feedback on motion detection, which can be helpful for quick troubleshooting if the sensor is not performing as expected.
  • Test Mode for Verification: The 8-second test mode allows installers and maintenance personnel to quickly verify the sensor's functionality after installation or adjustments, ensuring it is detecting motion correctly.
  • Adjustable Photo Cell (R Models only): The photo cell's sensitivity can be adjusted, allowing for fine-tuning to specific natural light conditions in a room, ensuring optimal energy savings and preventing unnecessary light activation.
  • Sensor Setup Service: Lutron offers a sensor setup service, providing expert assistance for optimal sensor layout and tuning, which can help ensure the sensor operates efficiently and effectively from the outset, reducing potential future maintenance issues.
