Overview

The Mastercraft Wood Lathe, model no. 055-6793-6, is a versatile power tool designed for shaping wood workpieces. This instruction manual provides comprehensive details on its assembly, operation, and maintenance, emphasizing safety guidelines for proper use.

Function Description:

The wood lathe is primarily used for turning wood, allowing users to shape cylindrical or irregularly shaped workpieces by rotating them against a cutting tool. It features a headstock, tailstock, and tool rest, which are essential components for supporting and shaping the wood. The headstock contains the motor and spindle, which rotates the workpiece. The tailstock provides support for the opposite end of the workpiece, especially for longer pieces, and can also be used to mount drills. The tool rest provides a stable platform for the user to brace cutting tools against the workpiece.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Motor: 120 V AC, 60 Hz, 3.3 A
  • Speeds: 500-3500 RPM (Variable Speed)
  • Distance between centres: 13" (33 cm) – This refers to the maximum length of a workpiece that can be turned between the headstock and tailstock centres.
  • Swing-over bed: 8" (20.3 cm) – This indicates the maximum diameter of a workpiece that can be rotated without hitting the lathe bed.
  • Drive spindle: 1 1/4" (3.2 cm), 8 TPI thread
  • Tailstock spindle travel: 2" (5 cm)
  • Headstock/tailstock internal taper: No. 2 MT (Morse Taper) – A standard taper used for mating male and female parts, ensuring a tight fit for accessories like centres or chucks.
  • Weight: 55 lb (25 kg)

Usage Features:

The Mastercraft Wood Lathe incorporates several features to enhance usability and safety:

  • Variable Speed Control Box: This box houses the electrical connections to the motor and includes a speed control knob, an On/Off switch, and a circuit-breaker reset button. The speed control knob allows for adjustment of the spindle speed from 500 to 3500 RPM, accommodating different workpiece weights and tool types. Turning the knob clockwise increases speed, while counter-clockwise decreases it.
  • On/Off Switch with Safety Key: The power switch is conveniently located on the right side of the machine. A safety key must be inserted into the switch for the lathe to operate. Removing the key locks the switch in the Off position, preventing accidental start-ups and ensuring safety, especially around children or unqualified users.
  • Reset Button: In case of motor overload or low voltage, the motor may shut off unexpectedly. The reset button allows the motor to be restarted after a cool-down period, provided the On/Off switch is in the Off position.
  • Tool Rests: The lathe comes with two tool rests: a 7" tool rest and a 4 1/2" tool rest. These can be easily installed and adjusted by loosening and tightening the lock levers on the tool rest base. The tool rest base itself can be moved along the bed and adjusted for angle, allowing for optimal positioning relative to the workpiece.
  • Headstock Spur Centre and Tailstock Cup Centre: These centres are used to hold workpieces between the headstock and tailstock. The headstock spur centre drives the workpiece, while the tailstock cup centre provides support. A push-out rod is used to remove these centres from their respective spindles.
  • Faceplate: A metal plate with a flat face-mounted spindle, designed for holding irregularly shaped workpieces or bowls. Workpieces are mounted onto the faceplate using brass wood screws. The faceplate has an open centre, which is useful for drilling through workpieces from the tailstock.
  • Spring-Loaded Lock Levers: These levers are used to lock the tailstock spindle and tool rest in position. Their design minimizes interference with other lathe parts or the workpiece. To operate, the handle lever is pushed in and turned clockwise to tighten; pulling it outward disengages the threaded shaft, allowing for repositioning.
  • Tailstock: This assembly slides along the bed and can be locked in place using a lock lever. The tailstock spindle can extend up to 2" (5 cm) and is adjusted via a hand wheel. It is hollow, allowing the push-out rod to remove the centre cup or to facilitate drilling through workpieces.
  • Bench Mounting: The lathe must be securely bolted to a bench top to prevent serious injury during operation. Four mounting holes are provided for this purpose, and M10 x 40 hexagon socket bolts with flat and spring washers are used for installation.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the wood lathe:

  • Cleaning: Frequent removal of dust accumulation from inside the motor, housing, and bed assembly is recommended. If the tailstock has been used for drilling, sawdust and shavings should also be blown out of the spindles.
  • Lubrication: Periodic lubrication of the spring levers and other threaded parts ensures smooth operation.
  • Bed Surface Care: Applying a coat of automotive wax to the bed helps keep the surface clean and facilitates smooth movement of the tool rest and tailstock.
  • Pre-Operation Checks: Before each use, it's important to check for damaged or missing parts, ensure all locks are tightened, and verify that the workpiece is properly mounted and balanced.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a troubleshooting section to address common issues such as poor cut quality, excessive vibration, and the lathe not turning on or off. Solutions range from adjusting tool position and speed to checking electrical connections and replacing fuses.

Safety Guidelines:

The manual stresses the importance of safety, outlining numerous precautions:

  • Always wear eye protection, a face mask or dust mask, and ear protection.
  • Avoid loose clothing, gloves, neckties, or jewellery that could get caught in moving parts.
  • Ensure the work area is clean, well-lit, and free of flammable liquids or gases.
  • Keep bystanders, children, and pets away from the work area.
  • Always remove the power cord plug from the outlet before making adjustments, changing parts, cleaning, or working on the tool.
  • Ensure guards are in place and in working order.
  • Never force the tool; let it work at its designed rate.
  • Do not operate the lathe if you are under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication.
  • Always rotate the workpiece by hand before turning on the motor to check for clearance.
  • Do not leave a running lathe unattended.
  • Ensure the tool rest is adjusted as close to the workpiece as possible and above the centreline.
  • Use proper extension cords as specified in the amperage rating table to prevent power loss and overheating.
  • The tool must be grounded to protect the operator from electric shock.

This Mastercraft Wood Lathe is designed for household projects and is not intended for industrial or commercial use. Users are advised to read the entire manual carefully before operation and save it for future reference.
