Overview

This document is an instruction manual for the Mastercraft Maximum Heavy-duty Bench Grinder, Model no. 055-3503-6. It provides comprehensive information on the grinder's specifications, safety guidelines, assembly, operation, maintenance, and warranty.

Function Description:

The Mastercraft Maximum 6" Bench Grinder is a versatile power tool designed for various tasks, primarily sharpening chisels, axes, and other wood-cutting tools. It is also useful for repairing tips on screwdrivers and drill bits, and for removing excess metal burrs from cut metal pieces. With appropriate accessories, it can be used for cleaning metal surfaces with a wire brush or for buffing and polishing with a cloth wheel. The grinder features two grinding wheels, typically a 36-grit and a 60-grit wheel, allowing for both coarse and fine grinding operations. It also includes a work light for improved visibility and a coolant tray to cool workpieces during grinding.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Motor: 120 V AC, 60 Hz, 2.5A
  • Wheel Size: 6 x 3/4" (15.2 x 1.9 cm) with 1/2" (1.27 cm) arbour. The manual specifies using only 6" (150 mm) diameter grinding wheels.
  • Wheel Grit: 36- and 60-grit (two wheels included).
  • Variable Speeds: 2000-3400 RPM (No load).
  • Weight: 25 lb 6 oz (11.5 kg).
  • Work Light Bulb: Uses Max 40 W anti-vibration light bulb.
  • Power Cord: Requires a 3-wire extension cord with a 3-pronged grounding type plug and matching receptacle. The manual provides a table for minimum gauge requirements based on cord length and ampere rating. For example, for a 120 V circuit with an ampere rating of 6-10A, a 25' cord requires 18 AWG, a 50' cord requires 16 AWG, a 100' cord requires 14 AWG, and a 150' cord requires 12 AWG.

Usage Features:

  • Variable Speed Control: The grinder is equipped with a variable speed control knob, allowing users to adjust the grinding speed by rotating the knob clockwise to increase speed and counter-clockwise to reduce it.
  • ON/OFF Switch with Safety Key: The rocker ON/OFF power switch is located on the front of the grinder. It includes a switch key that, when removed, prevents the grinder from operating, enhancing safety against accidental startup. The switch can be locked in the "OFF" position by pulling out the key.
  • Adjustable Eye Shields: The grinder features eye shields that must be properly adjusted close to the grinding wheel (and re-adjusted as the wheel wears down) to protect against flying sparks.
  • Adjustable Tool Rests: Tool rests are provided for both grinding wheels and must be adjusted to 1/8" (3.2 mm) or less from the grinding wheel. They should be tightened securely to prevent shifting positions. One tool rest has a V-groove specifically angled for sharpening most drill bits.
  • Spark Guards: These guards must be re-adjusted to maintain a 1/16" (1.6 mm) distance from the wheel as it wears down.
  • Coolant Tray: A coolant tray is included to allow users to cool heated workpieces by dipping them in water, preventing overheating during grinding.
  • Mounting Holes: The grinder base includes mounting holes for securing the unit to a sturdy workbench or grinding stand, which is crucial to prevent vibration and movement during operation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Checks: Before each use, users are advised to check the power cord, inspect wheels for cracks, and check moving parts for alignment and binding issues.
  • Grinding Wheel Maintenance:
    • Dressing: Grinding wheels should be dressed as needed to reshape them if they become worn unevenly, grooved, or no longer smooth and flat. Dressing also cleans the wheel face if it becomes loaded and dull with workpiece material. The manual specifies dressing only the face of the wheel.
    • Replacement: Grinding wheels should be replaced if they are cracked, chipped, or vibrate. The manual provides detailed instructions for installing or changing wheels, emphasizing the use of blotters and proper tightening of spindle nuts (right-hand thread on the right side, left-hand thread on the left side).
  • Cleaning: The motor housing and other grinder parts should be cleaned and vacuumed as needed to remove dust.
  • Work Light Bulb Replacement: The work light bulb should be replaced as needed. The manual instructs to gently push the bulb into the socket and turn clockwise.
  • Authorized Service: Any service beyond the recommended maintenance should be performed by an authorized, qualified technician.
  • Safety During Maintenance: Always turn off and unplug the bench grinder before making any adjustments or servicing. Allow wheels to stop completely before touching them. When installing a new wheel, stand to the side and let the grinder run for at least one minute at full speed to check for undetected flaws or cracks.
