wrists.
– Stimulate the circulation of blood by
taking regular breaks to stretch your
arms
– Avoid smoking.
– Keep the chain sharp and make sure
that the whole saw is in good
condition. If the chain is blunt the
sawing takes longer, and the body is
exposed to heavier vibrations by
pressing a blunt chain against the
tree. A saw with loose parts or a
damaged/worn vibration damper
also vibrates more.
– Do not use the saw for excessively
long periods all the time.
PRECAUTIONS TO
PREVENT KICKBACK
• Kickback can occur when the top of the
chain touches an object, or if the bar
fastens in the wood (often as a result of a
tight cut). In the worst case kickback can
cause the bar to be suddenly thrown up
and backwards towards the user. If the
chain fastens near the tip of the bar this
can cause it to be suddenly and forcibly
pressed backwards towards the user. Both
these events can cause you to completely
lose control of the saw, which can result in
serious personal injury.
• Do not put blind trust in the safety devices
built into the saw. A person using a
chainsaw must take several precautions to
avoid accidents:
– If you learn how kickback happens
you can avoid being taken unawares
when it does happen. It is often the
element of surprise that causes
accidents.
– Hold the saw rmly with both hands.
Always keep the right hand on the
back handle, and the left hand on the
front handle, as soon as the saw
starts. Always keep a rm grip round
the handles and use all your ngers.
A rm grip helps you to handle
kickback and to keep the saw under
control. Never release your grip.
– Check that the workplace is
unobstructed. Make sure the tip of
the bar cannot come into contact with
hidden branches or other obstructions
when working.
– Saw at full throttle.
– Never hold the saw too far in front of
you, and never above shoulder
height.
– Follow the instructions of the
manufacturer for sharpening and
looking after the saw chain.
– Only use replacement bars and chains
in accordance with the
recommendations of the
manufacturer.
