DifferentialFail SafeBiasing
Failsafebiasingisatechniquethat guaranteesdifferentialinputsi gnals areinasteadystatewhennot
connectedtoanactivedifferentialoutput.Optionalfailsafebiasingofalldifferentialinputs(RS422/RS
485/V.11)foraportisavailablebyinstallingaresistorpackinthesocketlabeled‘FAILSAFE’.Thisresistor
packisnotincludedbydefaultwiththehardware.ContactMicroGatesalestorequestfailsaferesistor
packswhenorderingthehardware.
Failsafebiasingisonlyusedwhenaninputisnotconstantlydrivenbyanoutput,andthatinputis
terminated(seeprevioussectionondifferentialinputtermination).Whenaninputisnotterminated,
failsafebiasingintegraltoeachreceivercircuitmaintainstheinputinasteadystate.Whenaninputis
terminated,externalfailsafebiasing(resistorpack)mayberequiredtoguaranteetheinputisina
steadystate.
Anexampleapplication thatusesfailsafebiasingis busmodeconnect ionswhereasinglecable
conductorpairisconnectedtoboththetransmitdataoutputandreceivedatainputformorethanone
station.Inthissetup,onlyoneoutputmaybeactiveatthesametimeandeachoutputisonly driven
whensendingdata.Whennostationissending,theexternalfailsafebiasingmaintainsavoltageonthe
cablepairthatkeepsinputsinasteadystate.
WARNING:Failsafebiasingmustbepresentononly asinglestationconnectedtoacablepair.This
singlestationmaintainsthevoltageonthecabletokeepallconnectedinputsinasteadystate.Applying
failsafebiasingatmultiplepointsonacablemayres ultinincorrectoperation.
