Overview

The Miller S-64M is a wire feeder designed for various welding processes, including MIG (GMAW) Welding, Pulsed MIG (GMAW-P), and Flux Cored (FCAW) Welding (Gas- and Self-Shielded). This device is intended to be used with CC/CV power sources.

Function Description

The S-64M wire feeder facilitates the continuous feeding of welding wire to the weld puddle, ensuring consistent and high-quality welds across different applications. It supports both gas-shielded and self-shielded flux cored welding, offering versatility for various industrial and professional welding tasks. The unit is designed for ease of use, with controls that allow for precise adjustment of welding parameters.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Input Power: The S-64M operates on 24 Volts AC, single-phase, 10 Amperes, 50/60 Hertz.
  • Welding Power Source Type: It is compatible with Constant Voltage (CV) DC for GMAW or Constant Voltage (CV) DC for GMAW-P, and also with Constant Current (CC) DC for FCAW-SS, with an optional High Frequency and Contactor Control.
  • Wire Feed Speed Range: The standard wire feed speed ranges from 50 to 780 inches per minute (ipm) or 1.3 to 19.8 meters per minute (mpm). An optional high-speed range is available, from 92 to 1435 ipm (2.3 to 36.5 mpm).
  • Wire Diameter Range: The feeder accommodates wire diameters from .023 to 5/64 inches (0.6 to 2 mm).
  • Welding Circuit Rating: It is rated for 100 Volts, 750 Amperes at 60% Duty Cycle.
  • IP Rating: The unit has an IP23 rating, indicating protection against solid objects over 12.5 mm and against direct sprays of water up to 60 degrees from the vertical.
  • Overall Dimensions: The S-64M measures 26-1/2 inches (673 mm) in length, 14 inches (356 mm) in width, and 14 inches (356 mm) in height.
  • Weight: The device weighs 58 lbs (26 kg).

Usage Features

The S-64M incorporates several features to enhance its usability and performance:

  • Operational Terms:
    • Adaptive Pulse Welding: The wire feeder automatically regulates pulse frequency to maintain a constant arc length, regardless of changes in weld wire stick-out.
    • Cold Wire Jog: When weld amperage is not present, the wire feeds for about three seconds at a set wire feed speed. The welding power source contactor deenergizes and the wire continues to feed at the wire jog speed.
    • Inductance: As inductance increases, arc on time increases, and the weld puddle becomes more fluid.
    • Trim: Arc length adjustment in pulse welding. Increasing trim increases the actual arc length. Trim is replaced by volts in MIG programs.
    • Synergic: This feature programs the pulse parameters for a specific wire feed speed. The wire feeder determines the pulse parameters between these wire feed speed increments.
    • Process Mode: Used to select the type of process to be used, including Pulse, Adaptive Pulse, or Mig.
    • Sequence Mode: Used to select and program the weld sequences which include weld, crater, burnback, postflow, preflow, and run-in.
    • Dual Schedule Mode: Used to select a pair of programs that can be used together.
    • Card Mode: Used to select the use of the optional data card storage and retrieval capabilities.
    • Security Mode: Only functions with a data card. Allows using the lock feature for restricting range of program parameter changing.
  • Front Panel Controls: Includes a display, parameter select button, jog button, display control, and trigger hold button/indicator light, allowing users to navigate menus, adjust parameters, and initiate welding processes.
  • Side and Rear Panel Controls: Features a mode display, mode select button, parameter display, parameter select button, parameter increase/decrease buttons, power switch, and circuit breaker.
  • Sequence Parameters: Allows for detailed programming of weld sequences, including weld time, crater time, burnback time, postflow time, run-in, and start time, with options for Pulse or MIG processes.
  • Dual Schedule Parameters: Enables the selection of dual schedule pairs, allowing two consecutive weld programs (MIG, Adaptive Pulse, or Pulse) to be combined.
  • Optional Data Card: Supports writing and reading programs to/from a data card, facilitating easy transfer and storage of welding parameters.
  • System Setup: Provides options for setting various system parameters such as process, range, access, MIG type, voltage, arc start, dual schedule, trigger, remote, arc time, wire feed, memory, shutdown, gas flow, teach, and software.
  • Standard Pulse Welding Programs: Pre-programmed settings for various wire types and sizes (Steel, Stainless, Nickel Alloy, Silicon Bronze) with corresponding IPM/MPM, Vpk, Apk, Abk, PPS, and PWms values.
  • SharpArc™ Control: Allows adjustment of arc cone width and arc characteristics, with settings from 0 to 20.
  • Teach Points: Enables the creation of custom pulse programs by defining teach points, which are specific welding parameters (IPM/MPM, Vpk, Apk, Abk, PPS, and PWms) that shape the pulse waveform of the weld output. This feature is available for 15 or 4 points.
  • Redefining Teach Points: Allows for modification of existing teach points to fine-tune welding parameters.

Maintenance Features

Routine maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of the S-64M. The manual outlines a schedule for routine maintenance:

  • Every 3 Months:
    • Replace unreadable labels.
    • Clean and tighten weld terminals.
    • Repair or replace worn/frayed weld cable.
    • Replace cracked parts.
    • Check the 14-pin cord.
    • Check gas hoses and fittings.
    • Check gun cable.
  • Every 6 Months:
    • Blow out or vacuum inside the unit. During heavy service, clean monthly.
    • Clean drive rolls.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common issues, including wire feeder not energizing, motor not lighting up, electrode wire feeding stops or feeds erratically, motor running slowly, wire not feeding until trigger is pulled, gas valve setting loudly, and unit not switching out of Run-In speed. Each issue is accompanied by recommended remedies such as checking interconnections, inspecting drive rolls, cleaning wire guides, and contacting authorized service agencies.

Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes safety with detailed warnings about electric shock, arc rays, welding fumes and gases, hot parts, magnetic fields, noise, and flying metal. It also provides information on EMF exposure and general safety standards. Users are advised to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, ensure proper ventilation, and follow all safety guidelines to prevent injury.
