make sure that all warning lamps are function-
ing properly before starting the engine.
10. Turn the emergency key with the keyless op-
eration key to the “START” position without

l
Minor noises may be heard on engine start-

up.
11. Remove the keyless operation key from the
emergency key.
WARNING
l
Make sure to remove the keyless opera-
tion key from the emergency key after
the engine is started.
If not removed, the keyless operation key
could fall to the floor, which could dis-
turb the pedal operation.
NOTE
l
If the emergency key is attached to a key hold-
er, it may become impossible to insert the key-
less operation key into the emergency key,
and it may prevent the engine from being star-
ted. When using the emergency key to start
the engine, first remove the key from the key
ring.
Using the MIVEC engine (3000 models)
The MIVEC engine automatically switches its in-
take-valve control between a low-speed mode and
a high-speed mode in accordance with driving con-
ditions for maximum engine performance.
NOTE
l
To protect the engine, the high-speed mode
may not be selected while the engine coolant
temperature is low. In such a case, the engine
revolutions do not rise to over 5,000 rpm
even if the accelerator pedal is depressed.
Starting the engine (diesel-powered vehicles)
1. Fasten the seat belt.
2. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
3. Depress and hold the brake pedal.
4. Fully depress the clutch pedal (M/T).
NOTE
l
On vehicles with the Auto Stop & Go
(AS&G) system, the starter will not operate
unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed
(Clutch interlock).
5. On vehicles equipped with M/T, place the
gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position.
On vehicles equipped with Twin Clutch
SST, make sure the gearshift lever is in the
“P” (PARK) position.
Vehicles with M/T Vehicles with
Twin Clutch SST
NOTE
l
On vehicles with Twin Clutch SST, the start-
er will not operate unless the gearshift lever
is in the “P” (PARK) position or the gear-
shift lever is in the “N” (NEUTRAL) posi-
tion with the brake pedal depressed.
For safety reasons, start the engine in the “P”
(PARK) position so that the wheels are locked.
