Automatic Transmission Operation - Workhorse Chassis
Park (P)
This position locks your rear wheels. It’s the best position to use when your start
your engine. Your vehicle has a brake-transmission shift interlock. You have to fully
apply your regular brakes before you can shift from PARK (P) when the ignition key is in
RUN. If you cannot shift out of PARK (P), ease pressure on the shift lever and push the
shift lever all the way into PARK (P) as you maintain brake application. Then move the
shift lever into the gear you wish.
In the event of a shift interlock solenoid malfunction, turn the key to OFF, pull the
shift selector lever into NEUTRAL (N) and start the engine. Make sure to set the parking
brake before starting the engine.
If you have a motorhome with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 16,000 lbs.
or greater, your transmission does not lock when in PARK (P). An automatic parking
brake will apply whenever your shift lever is moved to PARK (P). Depress brake pedal,
wait five or six seconds for the parking brake to fully apply, then release the brake pedal.
When your shift lever is moved from PARK (P), the automatic parking brake will release.
