LETDOWN
Plan your letdown well in advance of estimated landing time,
Generally, a power-on descent
is
most desirable.
A
grad-
ual rate of descent at cruising speed permits power settings
sufficiently high to maintain proper engine temperatures
and to prevent spark plug fouling. Sudden power reductions
at higher airspeeds can damage
the engine by causing it to
cool too rapidly.
Establish
a
gradual letdown by reducing power below cruise
while maintaining cruise airspeed throughout the descent.
Monitor cylinder head and oil temperatures throughout de-
scent to guard against over cooling. Oil in the oil cooler
can congeal very rapidly after a power reduction when
fly-
ing in cold weather.
