Overview

The MRC LX-1108 is a precision light meter designed for accurate measurement of illumination. This device is a complex yet durable instrument, utilizing a microprocessor circuit to ensure high accuracy and provide special functions and features. Its LSI circuit contributes to high reliability and durability, making it suitable for various applications in the field of precision measurement. The light meter features a separate light sensor, allowing users to measure light at an optimum position, enhancing flexibility and accuracy in diverse environments.

Function Description:

The primary function of the LX-1108 is to measure light intensity in both Lux and Foot-candle (Ft-cd) units. It offers a wide measuring range across five distinct settings, from very low light levels to extremely bright conditions. The device allows for the selection of different lighting types, including Tungsten, Fluorescent, Sodium, and Mercury lamps, to ensure accurate readings tailored to the light source being measured. For unknown light types, the "Tungsten Light" setting is recommended.

Key operational features include:

  • Data Hold: Freezes the current display value for easy recording.
  • Peak Hold: Captures and displays the maximum peak value measured.
  • Memory Function (Data Record): Records and displays both maximum and minimum measured values, which can be recalled. This function also allows for the deletion of recorded max/min values.
  • Zero Adjustment: A dedicated button allows for zeroing the instrument, particularly for the 40.00 Lux range, to ensure precise measurements. This requires covering the light sensor with its protection cover.
  • Auto Power Off: To conserve battery life, the meter automatically shuts off after approximately 10 minutes of inactivity. This feature can be disabled by engaging the memory record function during measurement.
  • RS-232 PC Serial Interface: Enables data output to a PC, providing a 16-digit data stream for user-specific applications and further analysis.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Measurement Ranges:
    • Lux: 40.00, 400.0, 4,000, 40,000, 400,000 Lux.
    • Foot-candle (Ft-cd): 4.000, 40.00, 400.0, 4,000, 40,000 Ft-cd.
  • Resolution:
    • Lux: 0.01 Lux (40.00 Lux range) to 100 Lux (400,000 Lux range).
    • Foot-candle: 0.001 Ft-cd (4.000 Fc range) to 10 Ft-cd (40,000 Fc range).
  • Accuracy: (3% rdg + 0.5% F.S.) for most ranges, with specific notes for values above 100,000 Lux and 9,300 Fc, where accuracy is for reference only. Accuracy is tested using a standard parallel light tungsten lamp of 2856 Kelvin.
  • Display: Large LCD (52 x 38 mm, 4 digits) with a bar graph indicator.
  • Sensor: Exclusive photo diode and color correction filter, designed to meet C.I.E. photopic spectrum and standard cosine correction factor. The sensor is separate from the main instrument.
  • Lighting Type Selection: Tungsten lamp, Fluorescent lamp, Sodium lamp, Mercury lamp.
  • Power Supply: DC 9V battery (006P, MN1604, or PP3 equivalent).
  • Power Consumption: Approximately DC 8 mA.
  • Dimensions:
    • Main Instrument: 200 x 68 x 30 mm (7.9 x 2.7 x 1.2 inch).
    • Light Sensor Probe: 82 x 55 x 7 mm (3.2 x 2.2 x 0.3 inch).
  • Weight: 220 g / 0.48 LB.
  • Operating Temperature: 0°C to 50°C (32°F to 122°F).
  • Operating Humidity: Less than 80% RH.
  • Data Output: RS-232 serial data output (9600, N, 8, 1 format).

Usage Features:

The LX-1108 is designed for user-friendly operation with rubber keys for function selection.

  • Power On/Off: Activated by the "Power Button."
  • Unit Selection: Toggle between Lux and Foot-candle units using the "Lux/Fc Button."
  • Lighting Type Selection: Choose the appropriate light source (Tungsten, Fluorescent, Sodium, Mercury) via the "Light Source Select Button" to optimize measurement accuracy.
  • Range Selection: The "Range Button" allows users to select the appropriate measurement range. The display indicates overload ("---") or out-of-range ("__") conditions, prompting the user to select a higher or lower range, respectively, to achieve higher resolution readings.
  • Sensor Placement: The separate light sensor (probe) should be positioned directly under the light source for accurate readings.
  • LCD Display Contrast: An adjustable VR (Variable Resistor) is available for adjusting the LCD display contrast.

Maintenance Features:

  • Low Battery Indicator: A " " symbol in the left corner of the LCD display indicates when battery replacement is necessary. The instrument can still function for several hours after this indicator appears.
  • Battery Replacement: To replace the battery, slide the "Battery Cover" open, remove the old 9V battery (Alkaline or Heavy duty type recommended), insert a new one, and secure the cover.
  • Sensor Cover: A protection cover is provided for the light sensor, which is essential for performing the zero adjustment and protecting the sensor when not in use.
  • Instruction Manual: A comprehensive instruction manual is included, and users are advised to keep it within easy reach for reference.

The LX-1108 is a robust and versatile light meter, equipped with features that make it suitable for a wide range of light measurement tasks, from general illumination checks to more precise applications requiring data logging and PC connectivity.
