Overview

The MTX Terminator Series Amplifiers are designed to enhance your vehicle's audio system, offering reliable and efficient Class-D circuit design in a compact footprint for easy installation. These amplifiers feature Surface Mount Component Technology and Direct Insert Power and Speaker Terminals, ensuring robust performance. They also include Power and Protection LED Light Status Indicators, as well as short, thermal, and under/over voltage protection for enhanced durability and safety.

The series includes several models: TN250.1, TN500.1, TN1000.1 (mono amplifiers), TN150.2, TN300.4 (full range amplifiers), and TN800.5 (a 5-channel amplifier). Each model is designed to cater to different audio system needs, from powering subwoofers to full-range speaker setups.

Key Features and Controls:

  • Gain Control: This control matches the input sensitivity of the amplifier to the source unit, with an operating range of 200mV to 6V.
  • RCA Inputs: These inputs accept signals from both low-level (RCA) and high-level (speaker) sources up to 6V. A minimum 200mV output from the source unit is required for proper amplifier operation.
  • Power / Protect LED: The LED illuminates blue during normal operation and red when thermal protection is activated, muting the output. It also briefly illuminates red for short, over, or under voltage protection, requiring correction of the fault condition before normal operation resumes.
  • X-Over Mode and Frequency Control (TN150.2/TN300.4): These controls allow adjustment of the frequencies played by the amplifier. Users can select Low Pass, Full Range, or High Pass modes, with a variable crossover frequency between 40Hz and 400Hz.
  • Input Configuration Switch (TN800.5): This switch enables selection between 4-channel or 5-channel mode, depending on the number of RCA outputs from the source unit.
  • External Bass Control (EBC) Port (TN250.1/TN500.1/TN1000.1/TN800.5): This port connects to the included MTX EBC for remote control of the amplifier's output level (sub channel only on TN800.5).
  • Bass Boost (TN250.1/TN500.1/TN800.5/TN1000.1): This control adjusts the Bass Boost level from 0-12dB, centered at 45Hz.
  • Subsonic Filter (TN250.1/TN500.1/TN1000.1): This control filters out unwanted low frequencies from 10Hz (Off) to 55Hz, particularly useful for vented subwoofer enclosures.
  • Low Pass X-Over Frequency Control (TN250.1/TN500.1/TN800.5/TN1000.1): This control adjusts the Low Pass crossover frequency, variable between 50Hz and 250Hz.
  • Speaker Terminals (+/-): These terminals connect directly to speakers/subwoofers and accept up to 10 AWG speaker cable.
  • Power Terminal (+12V): Connects to the vehicle's battery via a power cable and inline fuse/circuit breaker, accepting up to 4 AWG power cable.
  • Remote Terminal: Connects to the "remote" wire from the source unit to turn the amplifier on when +12V is applied.
  • Ground Terminal: Connects to the vehicle's chassis with a short ground cable of equivalent gauge to the power cable, accepting up to 4 AWG ground cable.
  • Phase Switch: Allows inversion of the amplifier outputs (0° default, 180° for improved bass response).

Installation and Maintenance:

MTX recommends professional installation by an Authorized MTX Dealer to ensure optimal performance and longevity, and to prevent damage to the amplifier, speakers, or vehicle's electrical system. Improper installation voids the warranty.

Installation Steps:

  1. Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable.
  2. Determine a mounting location with sufficient airflow for cooling. Mark and drill mounting holes, ensuring no interference with vehicle wires, gas lines, or brake lines.
  3. Install a positive (+) power cable from the battery through the firewall using a grommet, connecting it to the amplifier's (+12V) terminal (do not connect to the battery yet).
  4. Install a circuit breaker or fuse holder on the power cable within 18" of the battery. Connect the positive power cable to the positive battery terminal only after all connections are made.
  5. Locate a proper ground point on the vehicle's chassis, remove paint/dirt, and attach the ground wire to the amplifier's (GND) terminal.
  6. Connect a Remote Turn-on wire from the source unit to the amplifier's (REM) terminal.
  7. Connect signal cables from the source unit to the amplifier RCA inputs. For high-level outputs greater than 6V, a separate high-to-low level converter is required.
  8. Connect speakers to the amplifier's speaker terminals using appropriate gauge wire, adhering to minimum speaker impedance requirements.
  9. Double-check all connections, then reconnect the negative battery cable and turn on the circuit breaker or place the fuse in the fuse holder.
  10. Gain Adjustment: Turn gain control fully down, turn source unit volume to 3/4 max, adjust amplifier gain until audible distortion, then reduce gain until distortion disappears.
