BUILT-IN UNIT INSTRUCTION GUIDE
N415-0174/APR 15/09
Please use this manual in conjunction with your main manual to properly assemble your built-in grill. Refer to
the main manual for operating, cleaning, and maintenance instructions. This grill is designed for NON-COM-
BUSTIBLE enclosures only, and must be installed and serviced by a qualified installer to local codes.
BUILT IN PROPANE GAS HOOK-UP: The piping up to the gas grill is the responsibility of the installer and piping should be located as
shown in the built-in instructions. Do not use hose to connect the unit. It must be connected with either rigid pipe, copper tube or an
approved flexible metal connector. The installation must comply with CAN B149.1 Natural Gas and Propane installation code in
Canada, or to the National Fuel Gas code, ANSI Z223.1 in the United States. The minimum recommended piping size is NPS 1/2"
for rigid pipe, and 1/2" OD for copper tubing (based on a 20 ft run). Longer runs may require larger sizes to conform with local codes
or to conform with CAN B149.1. Propane Gas Installation Code in Canada or to the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1 in the
United States. The gas supply must be connected to the 3/8” flare fitting located under the right hand side of the control panel. If
installing a side burner, a separate line must be branched off to the side burner unit and enter the side burner opening at the
specified location. If the enclosure is to house a propane cylinder, the tank portion of the enclosure must be ventilated according to
local codes, and must not have communication with the cavity used to enclose the gas grill. A propane tank can not be stored below
the gas grill.
BUILT IN NATURAL GAS HOOK-UP: The piping up to the gas grill is the responsibility of the installer and piping should be located as
shown in the built-in instructions.
The minimum recommended piping size is NPS 1/2"
for rigid pipe, and 5/8" OD for copper tubing (based on a 20 ft run). Longer runs may require larger sizes to conform with local codes
or to conform with CAN B149.1. Natural Gas Installation Code in Canada or to the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1 in the
United States. The gas supply must be connected to the 3/8” flare fitting located under the right hand side of the control panel. If
installing a side burner, a separate line must be branched off to the side burner unit and enter the side burner opening at the
specified location.
Built in units are supplied with a drip pan which holds only a minimal amount of grease. To prevent grease fires, the pan must
be cleaned after each use.

Why is there low heat or low flame on my Napoleon BIM485 Grill when the valve is on high?
    • T
      Thomas AndersonAug 16, 2025
The low heat or flame could be due to several reasons. If you are using propane, ensure you are following the correct lighting procedure, with all gas grill valves in the off position when you turn on the tank valve, and turn the tank on slowly to equalize pressure. Refer to the lighting instructions. If you are using natural gas, the supply line might be undersized and needs to be sized according to the installation code. For both gas types, ensure you preheat the grill with both main burners on high for 10 to 15 minutes.

What to do if my Napoleon BIM485 has excessive flare-ups or uneven heat?
    • K
      Kathryn RodriguezAug 19, 2025
Excessive flare-ups and uneven heat may be caused by incorrectly installed sear plates. Make sure the sear plates are installed with the holes towards the front and the slots on the bottom, referring to the assembly instructions. Ensure you preheat the grill with both main burners on high for 10 to 15 minutes. Also, excessive grease and ash build-up on the sear plates and in the drip pan can cause this issue. Clean the sear plates and drip pan regularly, and do not line the pan with aluminum foil. Refer to the cleaning instructions.

Why does my Napoleon BIM485 burner output on high setting seem too low?
    • H
      Heather CunninghamAug 22, 2025
A low burner output on the 'high' setting, accompanied by a rumbling noise and blue flame, can be caused by several factors: a lack of gas, a pinched supply hose, a dirty or clogged orifice, spider webs or other matter in the venturi tube, or a propane regulator in a 'low flow' state. Check the gas level in the propane cylinder and reposition the supply hose if necessary. Clean the burner orifice and venturi tube. Also, ensure you follow the lighting procedure carefully by turning all gas grill valves off when you turn the tank valve on, and turn the tank on slowly to allow pressure to equalize. See the lighting instructions.

What to do if rear and side burners of Napoleon BIM485 will not light with the igniter?
    • K
      Kelly LeonardAug 26, 2025
If the rear and side burners will not light with the igniter, but do light with a match, it could be due to a dead or incorrectly installed battery. Replace it with a premium heavy-duty battery. Also, check that the electrode wire is firmly pushed onto the terminal on the back of the igniter and that the lead wires from the module to the ignition switch (if equipped) are firmly pushed onto their respective terminals. Closing the air shutter slightly might also resolve the issue.

Why won't the main burner on my Napoleon BIM485 light with the igniter?
    • J
      Jesse LongAug 28, 2025
If the main burner will not light with the igniter but will light with a match, the jet-fire outlet is likely dirty or clogged. Clean the jet-fire outlet with a soft bristle brush.

Why do the burners on my Napoleon BIM485 Grill burn with a yellow flame and smell of gas?
    • V
      vanessa55Aug 31, 2025
A yellow flame accompanied by the smell of gas may indicate a spider web or other debris in the burner, or an improperly adjusted air shutter. Thoroughly clean the burner by removing it, following the general maintenance instructions. The air shutter should be opened slightly according to the combustion air adjustment instructions, but this adjustment must be done by a qualified gas installer.

What to do if my Napoleon BIM485 infrared burner flashes back?
    • N
      nnortonSep 3, 2025
If the infrared burner flashes back, turn it off and allow it to cool for at least two minutes. Relight the burner and let it burn on high for at least five minutes, or until the ceramic tiles are evenly glowing red. Make sure that no more than 75% of the grill surface is covered by objects or accessories. If the issue persists, turn the burner off, let it cool, and inspect it closely for cracks. If you find any cracks, contact your authorized Napoleon dealer to order a replacement burner assembly.

Why do flames lift away from the burner on my Napoleon BIM485?
    • J
      James RodriguezSep 6, 2025
Flames lifting away from the burner, accompanied by the smell of gas and lighting difficulties, are likely due to an improperly adjusted air shutter. Close the air shutter slightly according to the combustion air adjustment instructions, but this adjustment must be done by a qualified gas installer.

Why does the 'paint' appear to be peeling inside the lid of my Napoleon grill?
    • C
      Christopher MendozaSep 9, 2025
The 'paint' peeling inside the lid or hood is not a defect. The finish is porcelain and will not peel. The peeling is hardened grease that has dried into paint-like shards. Regular cleaning will prevent this. Refer to the cleaning instructions.

Why won't the burners cross light each other on my Napoleon BIM485?
    • R
      Robert BellSep 12, 2025
If the burners will not cross light each other, the cross light brackets are likely dirty or corroded. Clean or replace them as required.
