Overview

The NI 9230 is a C Series module designed for simultaneous analog input measurements, suitable for various industrial and hazardous location applications. It comes in two versions: one with screw terminals and one with BNC connectors, both referred to inclusively as the NI 9230 throughout the documentation.

Function Description

The NI 9230 provides connections to three simultaneously sampled analog input channels. It is capable of measuring voltages from both ground-referenced and floating signal sources. For Integrated Electronic Piezoelectric (IEPE) sensors, the NI 9230 provides an IEPE excitation current for each channel, allowing for direct measurement of IEPE sensors. The AI+ terminal provides the DC excitation (when enabled) and the positive input signal, while the AI- terminal provides the excitation return path and the signal ground reference.

Usage Features

  • Installation: Before beginning, users must complete software and hardware installation procedures as outlined in their chassis documentation. The NI 9230 should only be operated as described in its documentation.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Do not operate the NI 9230 in a manner not specified in the document to avoid hazards and compromise of safety protection.
    • Connect only voltages within the specified safety limits (60 VDC continuous, 1,000 Vrms withstand for channel-to-earth ground).
    • Do not connect to signals or use for measurements within Measurement Categories II, III, or IV.
    • For hazardous locations, do not disconnect I/O-side wires or connectors, or remove modules, unless power has been switched off or the area is known to be nonhazardous.
    • Substitution of components may impair suitability for Class I, Division 2.
    • For Division 2 and Zone 2 applications, the system must be installed in an enclosure rated to at least IP54 (IEC/EN 60079-15).
    • For Division 2 and Zone 2 applications, connected low impedance sources must include a protection device between the source and the AI terminals to prevent AI+ to AI- voltage from exceeding 42 V during transient overvoltage.
    • Connected signals for Division 2 and Zone 2 applications must be within specified capacitance limits (0.08 µF max).
    • The enclosure must have a door or cover accessible only by the use of a tool.
  • EMC Compliance:
    • Operate with shielded cables and accessories to ensure specified EMC performance. Unshielded cables/accessories are only permissible if installed in a shielded enclosure with properly designed and shielded input/output ports and connected to the product using a shielded cable.
    • I/O cables must not exceed 30 m (100 ft) in length.
    • Connect the cable shield to the chassis ground.
    • For the screw terminal version, install clamp-on ferrite beads (part number 782802-01) on the input cable for each connected channel, as close to the module as possible.
  • Marine Applications: For marine applications, the product must be installed in a shielded enclosure with shielded and/or filtered power and input/output ports. Precautions must be taken with measurement probes and cables to ensure EMC performance.
  • Wiring for High-Vibration Applications (screw terminal version):
    • Use ferrules to terminate wires to the detachable connector.
    • Use the NI 9971 backshell kit.
  • Signal Connections: The NI 9230 supports both ground-referenced and floating signal sources. When making ground-referenced connections, ensure AI+ and AI- voltages are within the channel-to-earth safety voltage range.
  • Pinout: The manual provides detailed pinout diagrams for both screw terminal and BNC versions, indicating AI0+, AI0-, AI1+, AI1-, AI2+, and AI2- connections. For screw terminals, 2-wire ferrules are recommended for secure connections when multiple wires connect to a single terminal.

Maintenance Features

  • Repair: If the product is damaged, it should be returned to NI for repair.
  • ESD Prevention: Use industry-standard Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) prevention measures during installation, maintenance, and operation to prevent damage to the NI 9230.
