Overview

This document is a user and installation manual for the S5BD series split system air conditioner, specifically models that use R-22 refrigerant. The manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, installation, and maintenance of these outdoor units.

Function Description:

The S5BD series split system air conditioner is an outdoor unit designed to work in conjunction with an indoor coil to provide cooling and, when paired with a heating component, heating for residential or commercial spaces. The unit utilizes R-22 refrigerant to facilitate the heat exchange process, removing heat from the indoor environment during cooling cycles and transferring it outdoors. The system operates by circulating refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units, absorbing heat from the indoor air and releasing it to the outside.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual includes a table of electrical and physical data for various S5BD models (018KA, 024KB, 030KB, 036KB, 042KA, 048KA, 060KA). Key specifications include:

  • Volts-Cycles-Phase: 208/230-60-1 for all models.
  • Total Amps: Varies by model, e.g., 8.7 for 018KA to 26.7 for 060KA.
  • Delay Fuse Max. (2): Varies by model, e.g., 15 for 018KA to 40 for 060KA.
  • Min. Circuit Ampacity: Varies by model, e.g., 10.8 for 018KA to 33.1 for 060KA.
  • Coil: All models use 1-22 for Area and 1-18 for Rows-FPI.
  • Tube Dia O.D.: All models use 3/8" O.D. for MC.
  • Component Data:
    • Fan Motor: Type (PSC), HP (0.3 to 0.7), Amps (1/20 to 1/10).
    • Fan Blade: Dia (18" to 24"), HP (3 to 4).
    • Compressor Data: Type (SCFM), RLA (8.3 to 14.7), LRA (40.3 to 77.0).
  • Refrigerant Suction Line: Length O.D. varies by model and line length (e.g., 3/4" for 018KA to 1-1/8" for 060KA).
  • R-22 Refrigerant Charge (in Ounces): Varies by model, e.g., 78 for 018KA to 160 for 060KA (Outdoor Unit, Indoor Unit 15' Line Set).
  • Approximate Weight (lbs.): Net (103 to 229), Ship (107 to 238).
  • Unit Dimensions: The manual provides a diagram and table for unit dimensions (Height, Width, Depth). For example, the 018KA model is 23" high, 22 3/4" wide, and 22 3/4" deep, while the 060KA model is 31" high, 30 3/4" wide, and 30 3/4" deep.

Usage Features:

  • Operating Modes: The thermostat allows users to select COOL or AUTO mode for cooling and HEAT or AUTO mode for heating. In AUTO mode, the system automatically switches between heating and cooling to maintain the desired temperature.
  • Fan Operation: The fan can be set to AUTO or ON. In AUTO mode, the fan cycles with the compressor. In ON mode, the fan runs continuously.
  • Continuous Indoor Blower Operation: This feature can be activated to provide continuous air circulation, which helps maintain a more even temperature distribution and improves air quality.
  • Automatic Cooling & Heating: The system can be configured to automatically switch between cooling and heating based on the thermostat settings and the desired temperature level.
  • Refrigerant Charging: The manual includes detailed charging charts for various models (S5BD-018KA, S5BD-024KB, S5BD-030KB, S5BD-036KB, S5BD-042KA, S5BD-048KA, S5BD-060KA) for different ton units and indoor coils (with Microchannel Coil). These charts guide installers on how to properly charge the system with R-22 refrigerant based on liquid pressure (psig) and liquid temperature (F). Refrigerant charging tables are also provided, detailing suction pressure and discharge pressure at various outdoor and indoor wet bulb temperatures.

Maintenance Features:

  • Routine Maintenance: Proper maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity. This includes:
    • Cleaning/Replacing Air Filter: Inspect and clean or replace the air filter at the beginning of each heating and cooling season, or more frequently if required.
    • Condensate Drain and Outdoor Coil Inspection: Inspect the condensate drain and outdoor coil at the beginning of each cooling season. Remove any debris and rinse thoroughly with water.
    • Electrical Connections: Inspect electrical connections for tightness at the beginning of each heating and cooling season.
  • Professional Servicing: The manual emphasizes that maintenance should be performed by qualified service personnel. It warns against attempting repairs or maintenance without proper training, as it could lead to electrical shock, personal injury, or death.
  • Replacement Parts: Replacement parts are available through Nordyne distributors. The manual lists common replacement parts such as capacitors, contactors, pressure switches, relays, temperature limit switches, thermostats, time delay relays, transformers, blower motors, fan motors, blower assemblies, cabinet panels, fan grilles, filter/driers, and expansion valves.
  • Filter Replacement: The unit should never be operated without a filter in the return air system. Disposable filters with the same type and size should be used.
  • Oil Addition: Do not attempt to add additional oil to motors unequipped with oil tubes. The compressor is hermetically sealed at the factory and does not require lubrication.

The manual also includes important safety information, installation instructions, general information, and a wiring diagram (Figure 10. S5BD Wiring Diagram) to guide installers and users in the safe and correct handling of the device. It stresses the importance of following all local codes and ordinances, as well as national electrical codes (ANSI/NFPA 70) and Canadian electrical codes (CSA C22.1 and/or local codes).
