Overview

This document describes the Noritz Tankless Gas Water Heater, models NR83DVC (GQ-2457WS-FFA US) and NR83OD (GQ-2457WS US), designed for residential and manufactured home applications.

Function Description

The Noritz Tankless Gas Water Heater provides on-demand hot water, heating water only when needed, which contributes to energy efficiency. It features an automatic ignition device, eliminating the need for a pilot light. The unit is controlled via a remote controller (RC-7651M) which allows users to set the desired hot water temperature, monitor operation, and receive error codes. The NR83DVC model is an indoor wall-mounted, power vent/sealed model, while the NR83OD is an outdoor wall-mounted, power vented model. Both models are equipped with freeze prevention heaters to protect the internal components, though external plumbing requires additional protection in extremely cold conditions. The unit also includes a flow meter alarm feature, useful for filling tubs to a set volume.

Usage Features

  • Remote Controller (RC-7651M): The primary interface for controlling the water heater. It displays the set temperature, indicates burner operation, and shows error codes.
  • Temperature Setting: Users can adjust the hot water temperature using the UP/DOWN buttons on the remote controller. The factory default is 115°F (46°C). A high temperature warning (flashing display and tone) occurs when setting to 125°F (55°C) or higher.
  • Maximum Output Temperature Adjustment: The upper limit of the hot water supply temperature can be changed from the default 140°F (60°C) to lower settings (e.g., 115°F, 120°F, 125°F, 130°F, 135°F) for safety or specific application needs.
  • Flow Meter Alarm: This feature allows users to set a desired volume of water (e.g., for filling a bathtub). An alarm sounds for ten seconds when the set level is reached. Settings range from 10-60 gallons (40-240L) in 5-gallon (20L) intervals, or 70, 80, 90, 100, 990 gallons. The alarm will not sound if set for 990 gallons.
  • Muting the Remote Controller: The sound emitted when buttons are pushed can be muted by holding the Power On/Off button for five seconds. However, the flow meter alarm and high temperature warning tone cannot be muted.
  • Initial Operation: Before first use, users must open the water supply valve, open a hot water fixture to confirm water availability, open the gas supply valve, and turn on the power.
  • Freeze Prevention: The unit has an automatic freeze prevention heater that operates regardless of the power switch being ON or OFF, as long as the power plug is connected. This protects internal components down to -30°F (-35°C) for NR83DVC and -4°F (-20°C) for NR83OD. For colder temperatures or extended periods of non-use, manual draining of the unit and external plumbing is recommended.

Maintenance Features

  • Water Drain Valve (with Water Filter): The unit includes a water filter on the inlet side, which should be cleaned periodically to prevent debris from affecting hot water flow or causing the unit to produce cold water. Cleaning involves closing water supply, opening fixtures, removing drain plugs, taking out the filter, cleaning it with a brush under running water, and reassembling.
  • Periodic Flushing for Hard Water: In areas with hard water (exceeding 12 gpg or 200 mg/L total hardness), periodical flushing of the heat exchanger is necessary to prevent scale build-up. The unit will display an error code (C*#) if scale build-up is detected. Noritz America should be contacted for information on flushing the heat exchanger.
  • Isolation Valves: Installation of isolation valves (available as an accessory) is recommended for easier diagnostic testing and flushing of the system.
  • General Cleaning: The outside surface of the unit and the remote controller can be cleaned with a wet cloth and neutral detergent.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common issues related to ignition, temperature, water flow, and unusual sounds, along with corresponding actions. Error codes displayed on the remote controller (e.g., 11 for ignition error, 90 for abnormal combustion/low gas pressure, 99 for abnormal combustion, E*# and CF# for scale build-up) direct users to specific solutions or to contact Noritz.
  • Draining for Long Periods of Non-Use: If the water heater will not be used for an extended period, especially in freezing conditions, it should be completely drained to prevent damage. This involves turning off power and gas, opening hot water fixtures, and removing drain plugs. An air compressor can be used to ensure all water is removed.
  • Gas Conversion: The unit can be converted to use a different type of gas (Propane to Natural Gas or Natural Gas to Propane) using a specific conversion kit (CK-29 or CK-30). This must be performed by a qualified service agency and requires a Noritz remote controller and a digital gas manometer for proper adjustment and verification.
  • Repair Parts Availability: Noritz stocks repair and maintenance parts for twelve (12) years for the heat exchanger and ten (10) years for remaining parts from the date of original installation.
