Overview

This document serves as the owner's guide for the Noritz Tankless Gas Water Heater, Model NR83-DVC, designed for residential, commercial, or manufactured home applications. It provides crucial safety information, operational instructions, and maintenance guidelines to ensure safe and efficient use of the appliance.

Function Description

The Noritz Tankless Gas Water Heater is an on-demand water heating system that provides hot water only when needed, eliminating the need for a storage tank. This design ensures a continuous supply of hot water and can contribute to energy savings. The unit is equipped with an automatic ignition device, meaning there is no pilot light to manually ignite. When a hot water fixture is opened, the unit senses the demand and begins heating water as it flows through, delivering it at the user-selected temperature. The operation panel, Model RC-7651M, allows users to set the desired hot water temperature, monitor the unit's status, and manage other settings. The unit is designed for indoor wall-mounted installation with a power vent/sealed model configuration, utilizing a concentric pipe for air supply and exhaust. It includes safety features such as a flame rod, thermal fuse, lightning protection device (ZNR), overheat prevention device, and a fan rotation detector to ensure safe operation.

Usage Features

The water heater offers several user-friendly features for controlling hot water supply.

  • Temperature Setting: Users can easily adjust the hot water output temperature using the "UP" and "DOWN" buttons on the operation panel. The display shows the current set temperature in either Fahrenheit or Celsius, depending on the unit's configuration. The manual emphasizes checking the temperature setting before use, especially when setting it to 125°F (52°C) or higher, as such temperatures can cause severe burns. A high-temperature warning tone and flashing display will activate if a high temperature is selected.
  • Power On/Off: A dedicated "POWER ON/OFF" button allows users to turn the heater on and off. The "Burner On Indicator" lights up when the unit is actively heating water.
  • Muting the Operation Panel: The operation panel emits a sound when buttons are pressed. This sound can be muted by holding the "Power On/Off" button for five seconds. However, the flow meter alarm and high-temperature warning tone (when muted) will still function.
  • Flow Meter Alarm: This feature allows users to set an alarm for a specific volume of water (e.g., to fill a bathtub). Once the set volume is reached, an alarm sounds for ten seconds, indicating that the water flow should be manually stopped. The alarm setting can be adjusted in intervals, with options ranging from 10 to 990 gallons (40 to 380L). It's important to note that the alarm will not sound if set for 990 gallons.
  • Maximum Output Temperature Adjustment: The upper limit of the hot water supply temperature can be changed to prevent accidental scalding or to meet specific application requirements. This adjustment is performed by turning off the power, pressing and holding the flow meter alarm set button until a sound is heard, and then using the setting buttons to select the desired maximum temperature.
  • Freeze Prevention: The unit incorporates an automatic freeze-prevention heater to protect internal components from freezing, provided the power plug remains connected to the wall outlet. This system operates regardless of whether the unit's operation switch is ON or OFF. For extremely cold temperatures (below -30°F or -35°C), additional measures are recommended, such as turning off the power, closing the gas supply valve, opening a hot water fixture to maintain a small stream, and insulating external plumbing. If there's a risk of freezing, draining the unit is advised.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficient operation of the Noritz Tankless Gas Water Heater. The manual outlines both periodic inspections and maintenance tasks.

  • Periodic Inspection: Users are advised to regularly check the area around the water heater for combustible materials, listen for abnormal sounds during operation, inspect the external appearance for abnormalities, discoloration, or flaws, ensure proper operation of the pressure relief valve, and check for water leaks from the equipment and piping. The flue terminal should also be checked for dust and soot.
  • Water Drain Valve (with Water Filter) Cleaning: The water drain valve, which includes a water filter, can accumulate debris, affecting hot water flow or causing the unit to produce cold water. Cleaning involves closing the water supply valve, opening all hot water fixtures, removing the inlet and outlet drain plugs, taking out the water drain valve (with filter), cleaning it with a brush under running water, and then reassembling the components.
  • Equipment and Operation Panel Cleaning: The outside surface of the unit should be wiped with a wet cloth and then dried. A neutral detergent can be used for stains. The operation panel should also be wiped with a wet cloth, avoiding benzene, oil, or fatty detergents to prevent deformation. While the panel is water-resistant, it should be kept as dry as possible.
  • Draining the Water for Long Periods of Disuse: If the water heater will not be used for an extended period, it's recommended to drain the water to prevent damage. This process involves closing the gas and water supply valves, turning off the power, fully opening all hot water fixtures, and removing the drain plugs to allow all water to exit the unit. After draining, the drain plugs and fixtures should be closed.
  • Isolation Valves (Optional Accessory): Noritz offers isolation valves as an accessory. These valves facilitate full diagnostic testing and easy flushing of the system, simplifying maintenance and troubleshooting. The kit includes two full port isolation valves and a pressure relief valve for the hot side.
  • Water Quality Considerations: The manual highlights that damage due to poor water quality is not covered by the Limited Warranty. It provides target levels for various water quality parameters (e.g., total hardness, aluminum, chloride, copper, iron, manganese, pH, total dissolved solids, zinc, sulfate ion, residual chlorine). If the supply water exceeds these levels, treatment methods (such as a water softener or scale inhibitor) are recommended to prevent scale build-up and ensure full warranty coverage. Periodic flushing of the unit is suggested to remove scale if it forms.

Troubleshooting and Service

The guide includes a comprehensive troubleshooting section to address common issues related to ignition, temperature, and hot water availability. It also details how to interpret and reset error codes displayed on the operation panel. For issues that cannot be resolved through troubleshooting, users are advised to contact Noritz America Technical Support. The manual also outlines warranty information, the availability of repair parts, and guidelines for gas conversion if the unit needs to be adapted for a different gas type. Gas conversion must be performed by a qualified service agency to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.
