Clear zones around the wheelchair user/ mobility base/ buggy are required as shown in the gure be-
low. To the front, a clear zone of 650 mm is needed when the 3-point shoulder and pelvic belt occupant
restraint is used . If only a pelvic belt is used as person restraint system the clear zone to the front
must be 950 mm. To the rear, a clear zone of 400 mm must be observed. The overall height from
oor in respect of small, female adults, a clear zone of 1200 mm is required; in respect of large,
male adults a clear zone of 1550 mm is required.
Clear Zones
The safety belts for the transport in a motor vehicle must conform to the following standards/ guidelines:
International USA FRG
ISO 7176-19 ANSI/ RESNA WC/ 19 DIN 75078-
Person restraint system ECE 16 or FMVSS209 FMV SS 209 and ECE 14/ 16
or equal FMV SS 302 or equal
ISO 3795
Pelvic belt tested
according to ANSI/ RESNA WC/ 19
Wheelchair restraint system ISO 10542 SAE J2249 ECE 16
or equal
