The OVAL Total Counter, available in models EL0122 and EL0123, is a lightweight and compact multifunction counter built around a single-chip microprocessor. It offers various display functions, including cumulative total flow, hourly and per-minute instantaneous flowrate, and resettable total flow, along with a factored pulse output. Optional features for the EL0122 model include a 4-20mA DC and 1-5V DC flowrate output, as well as high/low alarm output.
Function Description:
The counter is designed to display four key variables:
- Accumulated total flow: This is the running total of flow, calculated by adding "Parameter FxParameter H" to the current reading each time a pulse (after frequency division) arrives at the CPU. The display shows readings down to the decimal places set in the "Parameter SP" menu, and resets to zero upon reaching its maximum (99,999,999).
- Hourly instantaneous flowrate: Calculated as
3600 × F × H × A / T, where F is the meter factor, H is the conversion factor, A is the number of pulses sampled, and T is the sampling time in seconds. The reading is displayed down to the decimal places set in the "Parameter bP" menu.
- Per-minute instantaneous flowrate: Calculated as
60 × F × H × A / T. This reading is displayed down to two additional decimal places beyond the hourly instantaneous flowrate. If no pulses are received within the sampling time, the flowrate reads "0". If it exceeds 99,999, it remains at "99999".
- Resettable total flow: This allows for a total flow reading that can be reset to zero using the "RESET" button.
The device also provides a factored pulse output, which produces pulses in the unit set by the "Parameter Pu" menu.

Usage Features:
- Easy Navigation: The counter uses "MODE" and "RESET" pushbuttons for display and parameter setup. A short press of "MODE" scrolls through display variables, while a prolonged press enters "Review Mode" for parameter adjustments.
- Parameter Setup Procedure: Parameters like meter factor (F), conversion factor (H), pulse weight (Pu), sampling time (At), and alarm settings (A1d, A2d) can be configured. The setup involves navigating through menus, modifying values using "MODE" (moves blinking digit) and "RESET" (increments digit), and confirming changes with a prolonged "MODE" press.
- Decimal Point Setup: Users can set the decimal point location for instantaneous flowrate ("bP") and total flow ("SP") displays.
- Analog Output Trim (EL0122 option): The 4mA and 20mA analog outputs can be trimmed for accuracy using specific parameter menus ("A04" and "A20").
- Dummy Output Features (Special Functions): The device can furnish a 1Hz or 10Hz simulated factored pulse train, useful for loop checks, independent of flowmeter measurement. This feature is not available for unfactored pulse output.
- Installation: Designed for panel mounting, requiring removal of fittings, front mounting through an opening, and securing with fittings from inside the panel.
- Wiring: Uses electrostatically-shielded control cables. Power cables should be routed separately from signal cables to prevent interference. Crimp-style terminals are recommended for good electrical connections.
- Input Signal Compatibility: Before wiring, ensure the flowmeter (pulse generator) is compatible with the counter. Invalid combinations can lead to downtime.
- Waveshaping Functions: Jumpers on the power supply board allow for adjustment of waveshaping filtering to suit specific pulse input specifications.
- Output Pulse Width: The default pulse width is 1ms, but can be adjusted via the "Pon" parameter menu to ensure pulses do not overlap, especially for high flow ranges.
Maintenance Features:
- Error Messages: The LCD displays error messages (e.g., "PA. Err.", "PA. Err. Pu", "AnA. Err.", "Out. Err.", "BATT") to indicate conflicts in parameter settings, erratic conditions, or low battery. Each error has a corresponding coping action, such as resetting SW3, reconfiguring parameters, reducing flowrate, or replacing the battery.
- Parameter Initialization: In case of parameter errors or erratic conditions, the counter can be initialized by removing external power, pressing the "MODE" switch while reapplying power, and releasing "MODE" when "PA. rESEt" appears. This should only be done when absolutely necessary.
- Battery Replacement: When the "BATT" alarm message appears, the battery should be replaced within a week. The process involves extracting the internal electronics assembly, uncoupling bead bands, and replacing the battery pack. Care must be taken to avoid bumping internal components.
- Troubleshooting Guide: A table is provided to help localize the cause of trouble based on symptoms (e.g., display failure, error messages) and suggests possible causes and checks (e.g., power supply, fuse, wiring, pulse generator, CPU). For issues not listed, users are advised to contact the factory with product details.
