Overview

This document describes the Paloma/Rheem Unflued Portable Gas Convection Room Heater, covering its installation, operation, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Paloma/Rheem Unflued Portable Gas Convection Room Heater is designed for use in a single-family domestic dwelling for room heating. It operates on either Natural Gas (NG) or Propane (LPG), depending on the model. The heater features electronic ignition and an energy-efficient 7-stage modulating gas valve, ensuring optimal performance and reduced emissions. It has an AS4553 Efficiency Star Rating of 5.9 Stars and is classified as a Class 1 Appliance AS4553:2008, with less than half the emissions of the Australian Standard.

The heater provides adjustable room temperature control, allowing users to set their desired temperature between 16°C (low) and 26°C (high) using up and down arrows on the control panel. It includes a dual timer function, enabling automatic operation at two separate periods of the day. A pre-heat function allows the heater to automatically start one hour prior to the programmed starting time to warm the room. The automatic economy function further enhances efficiency by gradually reducing the set room temperature by 1°C every 30 minutes, up to a maximum of 2°C, once the desired temperature is reached. This subtle reduction is designed to be unnoticed by the user.

For safety, the heater is equipped with several devices:

  • Filter Clean Warning Device: Flashes a light when the air filter is clogged or the hot-air outlet is blocked, switching off the heater.
  • Anti-tilt Safety Switch: Automatically shuts off gas flow if the heater is knocked or bumped.
  • Oxygen Depletion Safety System: Shuts off gas flow if the oxygen level in the room drops below a safe level.
  • Flame Failure Device: Prevents gas flow to the burner if ignition fails or the flame goes out.
  • Power Failure Device: Prevents gas flow to the burner if there is a power failure.
  • Overheat Safety Device: Shuts off gas supply if the fan stops rotating.
  • Over Current Safety System.
  • Back Burner Protection.
  • Unattended Appliance Shut Off Device: The heater shuts off after 8 hours of continuous operation.
  • Air Volume and Combustion Control.

The heater also includes a Child Lock function to prevent accidental operation and interference with controls.

Usage Features

The heater is operated via a control panel and an infrared remote controller.

  • Turning Heater On/Off: Pressing the ON/OFF button on the control panel or remote starts the heater. A green operation light indicates it's on, followed by a red combustion light upon proper ignition. Pressing the ON/OFF button again turns the heater off. The convection fan continues to operate for up to 4 minutes after shutdown to cool the internal components.
  • Temperature Adjustment: The display shows both the set temperature and the current room temperature. Users can adjust the set temperature using the up/down arrows.
  • Setting the Clock: When first plugged in, the digital display flashes, indicating the time needs to be set. This is done using the SET TIMES button and the up/down arrows. The clock must be set for timer functions to operate.
  • Programming Timers: Two timers (TIMER 1 and TIMER 2) can be programmed to turn the appliance ON and OFF at specific times. The process involves pressing the SET TIMES button to enter programming mode, then using the up/down arrows to set the ON and OFF times for each timer.
  • Timer Over-ride Function: This function allows users to manually override the preset timer program. Pressing the OVERRIDE button can turn the heater on or off, regardless of the programmed timer settings.
  • Child Lock: To activate, press and hold the down and up buttons simultaneously for three seconds. A key symbol illuminates on the display. Repeat the action to deactivate. When activated, only the ON/OFF button can be used if the heater is operating; no buttons can be activated if the heater is off.
  • Remote Control Operation: The remote can turn the heater ON/OFF, adjust the set temperature, and activate/deactivate TIMER 1 and TIMER 2, as well as the timer override function. It cannot be used for programming.

Maintenance Features

Regular care and maintenance are crucial for safe and correct operation.

  • Daily Inspection: Check for flammable materials near the heater, ensure the air filter is correctly fitted and clean, verify the gas hose connection, and inspect the electrical cord for damage.
  • Cleaning the Air Filter: The filter clean warning device will flash if the air filter is clogged. Air Filter (1) can be removed and cleaned with a vacuum cleaner or mild soapy water, then refitted after drying. Air Filter (2) should not be removed. The heater must not be operated without the filter.
  • Cleaning the Outer Casing: The heater's outer casing should be cleaned monthly with a damp soft cloth, or mild soapy water for severe dirt. Gloves are recommended due to potential sharp edges.
  • Cleaning the Louvre: Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dirt from the louvre. White powder may form and can be wiped off with a soft cloth. Avoid pressing the louvre heavily, as this could cause breakage and affect heat discharge.
  • Servicing: All repair and service work must be carried out by a qualified person. It is recommended that the heater be inspected and serviced every 12 months or prior to each winter season.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues, such as the heater not operating, not igniting, turning off, or not warming the room sufficiently. It also lists error codes displayed on the screen, along with probable causes and suggested remedies. If issues persist or unusual odors are detected, users are advised to contact Rheem Service.
  • General Precautions: Do not move the heater during operation, do not unplug it while operating or while the fan is still cycling, and do not use it in areas with spray painting or excessive dust/fluff. Ensure proper ventilation and room sizing according to Australian Standard AS/NZS5601.1:-2010. Do not block louvres or air inlets.
