Overview

This document describes the Panasonic SA-HT17PP AV Control Receiver, a central component in a home theater system, designed to deliver high-quality audio and video performance.

Function Description

The SA-HT17PP acts as an AV control receiver, processing audio and video signals from various sources and distributing them to speakers and a display. It supports both Dolby Digital and DTS Surround sound formats, providing an immersive audio experience. The unit integrates an amplifier section, a video selector, and FM/AM tuner capabilities. A unique feature is its reliance on an active subwoofer for power supply to the main unit, simplifying power management within the system.

The amplifier section boasts a total RMS output power of 1000 W, with individual channel outputs as follows: 170 W per channel for front speakers (6 Ω), 70 W per channel for surround speakers (4 Ω), 260 W per channel for the center speaker (4 Ω), and 260 W for the subwoofer (4 Ω) at 100 Hz. For Dolby Digital mode, the rated minimum sine wave RMS power output is 100 W per channel for front (6 Ω), 45 W per channel for surround (4 Ω), 140 W per channel for center (4 Ω), and 150 W for subwoofer (4 Ω). In stereo mode, the front channels deliver 90 W per channel (6 Ω) and the subwoofer 150 W per channel (4 Ω). The total FTC output power is 580 W for Dolby Digital mode and 330 W for Stereo mode.

The receiver includes a video selector for managing multiple video inputs, including DVD, DVR/VCR, TV, and GAME/AUX. The video output voltage is 1±0.1 Vp-p at 1 V input (unbalanced), with a maximum input voltage of 1.5 Vp-p and an input/output impedance of 75Ω.

The FM tuner section covers a frequency range of 87.9-107.9 MHz, with a sensitivity of 11.2 dBf (2 µV, IHF'58) and a 50 dB quieting sensitivity of 18.3 dBf (4.5 µV, IHF'58) for mono. The AM tuner section operates from 530-1710 kHz, with a sensitivity of 450 µV/m and a selectivity of 20 dB.

Audio processing includes tone controls for bass (50 Hz, +10 to -10 dB) and treble (20 kHz, +10 to -10 dB). Digital inputs include two optical and one coaxial input.

Usage Features

The SA-HT17PP is designed for user-friendly operation with a clear display and remote control.

  • Input Selection: Users can easily switch between various audio/video sources such as TUNER, DVD, TV, GAME/AUX, and DVR/VCR.
  • Tuning: Radio stations can be tuned manually or by presetting channels using the V TUNE ^ buttons.
  • Menu Navigation: A dedicated MENU button allows access to various settings, with a press-and-hold function to exit the menu.
  • Volume Control: A large VOLUME knob and remote control buttons provide precise volume adjustment.
  • Headphone Jack: A 3.5 mm (1/8") stereo headphone jack is included for private listening, automatically muting the speakers when in use.
  • Sound Enhancement: The H.BASS feature enhances bass sound, and the C.FOCUS (Center Focus) mode can be activated for specific audio needs.
  • Surround Sound Modes: The receiver supports Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II (Movie, Music, Panorama), and DTS Surround. SFC (Sound Field Control) modes like LIVE, POP/ROCK, VOCAL, JAZZ, DANCE, PARTY, DRAMA, ACTION, SPORTS, MUSICAL, and GAME are available for tailored audio experiences.
  • Power Saving: The unit consumes minimal power in standby mode (1 W). Unplugging the unit from the AC outlet for extended periods further conserves energy, though some memory items may need resetting upon replugging.
  • Display Indicators: The front panel display provides comprehensive information, including input mode, radio frequency, program format indicators (L, C, R, LS, S, RS, LFE), tuner status (TUNED, ST, MONO), sleep timer status (SLEEP), and presetting indicator (M). A spectrum analyzer display offers visual feedback of audio levels.

Maintenance Features

The SA-HT17PP incorporates several features to aid in maintenance and ensure safe operation.

  • Self-Diagnosis Display Function: The unit is equipped with a self-diagnosis function that displays error codes (FXX) on the FL display in case of faulty operation. This helps technicians quickly identify and troubleshoot problems. Error codes include:
    • OVERLOAD: Indicates speaker short or amplifier failure.
    • FAN LOCK: Indicates fan stoppage or fan control circuit failure.
    • F70: Signals a communication error between the sub-microprocessor and its peripheral LSI.
    • F76: Indicates a failure in the power circuit system, possibly due to direct current electricity supplied to speaker terminals.
  • Doctor Mode: This self-diagnosis mode can be activated by pressing and holding "INPUT SELECTOR" and "HARMONIC BASS" buttons simultaneously, then pressing "POWER." It initializes settings, sets a specific tuner frequency, and displays "DOCTOR" for 3 seconds, with the display blinking at 1Hz to indicate activation. This mode allows for various tests and checks of buttons, sound modes, and volume/tone settings.
  • Service Mode: Activated by holding "HARMONIC BASS" and "TUNING DOWN" buttons, then "POWER." This mode displays "SERVICE" for 3 seconds and is used for servicing purposes, including confirming software versions.
  • Shutdown and Short Circuit Protection Detection: The unit detects S_DET (short detection) and DC_DET (fan lock detection) inputs for malfunctions.
    • S_DET: Detects shorts in the power supply, activating 700ms after power-on. Upon detection, "F76" is displayed, and the system powers off.
    • DC_DET: Detects fan lock, displaying "FAN LOCK" and muting all audio.
  • Frequency Limiter: This feature limits output levels for front L/R and surround L/R channels based on volume conditions to prevent speaker noise, especially when speaker configurations change.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes safety guidelines for servicing, including disconnecting AC power, discharging capacitors, and observing original lead dress. It highlights the importance of replacing protective devices and performing leakage current checks to prevent shock hazards.
  • Lead-Free Solder (PbF): The P.C.B.s use lead-free solder, which has a higher melting point (50-70°F higher than standard solder). Technicians are advised to use a high-temperature soldering iron (700 ± 20°F) and ensure complete removal of old solder.
  • Static Electricity Precautions: IC, LSI, and VLSI components are sensitive to static electricity. During repair, technicians are advised to cover parts boxes with aluminum foil, use a conductive mat, ground the soldering iron, and avoid direct contact with component pins.
  • Active Subwoofer Power Supply: The main unit's power is supplied by the active subwoofer. If the active subwoofer is unavailable for repair, a power jig (RFKZ0182) can be used to power the main unit.

This comprehensive design ensures both high performance and ease of maintenance for the SA-HT17PP AV Control Receiver.
