Overview

The Pentair Posi-Clear RP Cartridge Filter is a high-performance filtration system designed for pools and spas, ensuring clean and clear water. This filter operates under pressure and utilizes a cartridge element to trap dirt and debris. Proper installation, operation, and maintenance are crucial for its safe and efficient performance, as outlined in the provided user's guide.

Function Description:

The Posi-Clear RP Cartridge Filter is a key component of a pool or spa's circulation system. Its primary function is to remove suspended particles, dirt, and other impurities from the water, providing a clean and healthy swimming environment. Water from the pool or spa is drawn through the filter by a pump, passes through the cartridge element where contaminants are trapped, and then returns to the pool. The filter's design emphasizes ease of use and maintenance, with a focus on safety through clear warnings and instructions regarding high-pressure operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

The filter is designed to operate safely with a maximum working pressure of 50 psi. It is critical never to exceed this pressure, even during hydrostatic pressure tests, as doing so can cause damage to the filter and potentially lead to severe injury or death. The filter models come in different sizes, indicated by their square footage:

  • Model 160351: 100 sq. ft.
  • Model 160352: 150 sq. ft.
  • Model 160350: 200 sq. ft.

These different sizes correspond to varying vertical clearance requirements for lid removal during servicing:

  • 100 sq. ft. model: 61 inches
  • 150 sq. ft. model: 76 inches
  • 200 sq. ft. model: 76 inches

The filter's performance is also characterized by its flow rates, which vary for residential and commercial applications:

  • Residential Recommended Flow Rate: 0.5 GPM per sq. ft.
    • 100 sq. ft. filter: 100 GPM (6,000 GPH, 36,000 GPH for 6 hours, 48,000 GPH for 8 hours)
    • 150 sq. ft. filter: 150 GPM (9,000 GPH, 54,000 GPH for 6 hours, 72,000 GPH for 8 hours)
    • 200 sq. ft. filter: 150 GPM (9,000 GPH, 54,000 GPH for 6 hours, 72,000 GPH for 8 hours)
  • Commercial Maximum Flow Rate: 0.375 GPM per sq. ft.
    • 100 sq. ft. filter: 38 GPM (2,280 GPH, 13,680 GPH for 6 hours, 18,240 GPH for 8 hours)
    • 150 sq. ft. filter: 56 GPM (3,360 GPH, 20,160 GPH for 6 hours, 26,880 GPH for 8 hours)
    • 200 sq. ft. filter: 75 GPM (4,500 GPH, 27,000 GPH for 6 hours, 36,000 GPH for 8 hours)

Actual system flow rates may vary depending on plumbing size and other system components. The filter incorporates a High Flow Manual Air Relief Valve (P/N 98209800) and a Pressure Gauge (P/N 190058) as critical components for safe operation and monitoring. The cartridge elements are specific to the filter size: R173215 for 100 sq. ft., R173216 for 150 sq. ft., and R173217 for 200 sq. ft.

Usage Features:

The Posi-Clear RP Cartridge Filter is designed for straightforward operation, but adherence to safety instructions is paramount.

  • Installation: The filter must be installed on a level concrete slab, ensuring that instructions, warnings, and the pressure gauge are clearly visible. Adequate clearance (at least 6 inches) around the filter and sufficient vertical space above it are required for servicing. Electrical controls (ON/OFF switches, timers, control systems) should be positioned to allow the user to stand clear of the filter and pump strainer lid during startup, shutdown, or servicing. Plumbing connections should be made in accordance with local codes, using O-ring seals and PTFE or silicone-based lubricants for O-rings to prevent damage.
  • Startup: Before starting the pump, the High Flow Manual Air Relief Valve must be opened to release trapped air. The pump should be started with the valve open, and once a steady stream of water appears, the valve can be closed. This process ensures that air is purged from the system, preventing dangerous pressure buildup.
  • Pressure Monitoring: The pressure gauge is the primary indicator of the filter's operation. Users should record the "Original Starting Pressure" when the filter is clean. For variable speed pumps, the "Original Pump RPM" should also be noted. The filter needs cleaning when the pressure reads 8-10 psi higher than the original starting pressure or when a significant reduction in flow is observed.
  • Air Relief: The High Flow Manual Air Relief Valve allows for rapid release of air from the filter tank, a critical safety feature during startup and before any servicing.
  • Water Quality Enhancement: For new pools or after cleaning, introducing 0.5 pounds of diatomaceous earth per 100 square feet of filter area (mixed with water and poured into the skimmer) can enhance filtration.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and efficient operation of the Posi-Clear RP Cartridge Filter.

  • Pressure Gauge Maintenance: The pressure gauge must be in good working order. It should read zero (0) psi when the system is off and pressure is relieved, indicate pressure when operating, and be readable without damage. If it fails any of these checks, it should be replaced with Pentair P/N 190058.
  • Manual Air Relief Valve Cleaning: This valve should be cleaned if a solid stream of water does not appear within 30 seconds of pump startup or if the pressure gauge indicates pressure before water outflow. The cleaning process involves shutting off the pump, relieving pressure, and then disassembling the valve stem and cover assembly. Debris should be cleaned, the air passage checked with a 5/16" drill bit, and O-rings inspected, properly positioned, and lubricated with silicone-based lubricant (petroleum-based products will damage O-rings).
  • Filter Cleaning: The cartridge element should be cleaned when the pressure gauge indicates an increase of 8-10 psi above the original starting pressure.
    1. Turn off the pump and any automatic controls.
    2. Open the High Flow Manual Air Relief Valve and the waste drain valve (if present).
    3. Remove and clean the hair and lint strainer pot basket.
    4. Disconnect the air relief drain hose (if installed).
    5. Remove the lock ring by depressing safety latches and rotating counterclockwise, then remove the tank lid.
    6. Remove the element assembly by lifting it straight up using the handles.
    7. Separate the cartridge element from the center support tube.
    8. Use a garden hose with a nozzle to spray water at the cartridge element, both outside and inside, to dislodge and wash away accumulated foreign matter.
    9. For pools/spas with high levels of perspiration, suntan lotions, or oils, soak the cartridge for at least an hour (overnight is most effective) in a commercial filter cleaner, one cup of trisodium phosphate (TSP) to five gallons of water, or one cup of dishwasher detergent to five gallons of water. Always follow manufacturer instructions for commercial cleaners. Rinse thoroughly to remove all oils and cleaning solutions before reassembly.
    10. Wash out the inside of the tank body and bottom manifold.
    11. Check the gasket around the outer lip of the bottom plate for proper seating.
    12. Clean debris from inside the filter tank, O-ring, and O-ring groove.
    13. Replace the clean cartridge element on the support tube, aligning the arrow on the support tube with the filter's inlet port. Ensure the internal air relief screen is attached to the top of the element support tube.
    14. Replace the tank lid, ensuring it is fully seated.
    15. Place the lock ring over the tank lid, center it on the threads, and turn clockwise until the safety latches click and it hits the stops. Do not overtighten.
    16. Generously coat the O-ring with silicone lubricant before reassembling.
    17. Replace the drain cap and reinstall the manual air relief valve drain hose if used.
  • Cartridge Element Replacement: Cartridge element life typically averages three years, but this can vary based on pool conditions (bather load, wind, dust). Replacement follows the same steps as cleaning the filter.

The Posi-Clear RP Cartridge Filter is a robust and reliable system when maintained according to these guidelines, providing effective filtration and contributing to a safe and enjoyable pool or spa experience.
