Overview

The device described in the manual is a 4-ton hydraulic bottle jack, identified by item number W1623. It is designed for lifting heavy loads, primarily vehicles, and is intended for use on hard, level surfaces.

Function Description:

The hydraulic bottle jack operates by using hydraulic fluid to generate force, allowing it to lift objects. It features a pump handle for raising the load and a release valve for controlled lowering. The jack is a lifting device only, and once a load is lifted, it must be immediately supported by jack stands to ensure safety. It is crucial not to work under a vehicle without proper support from jack stands.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Capacity: 8,000 lbs.
  • Minimum Lift Height: 7 5/8 in.
  • Maximum Lift Height: 15 5/8 in.
  • Base Length: 4 in.
  • Base Width: 3 1/2 in. The manual notes that specifications are subject to change without notice.

Usage Features:

Before initial use, and periodically thereafter, the jack requires a "bleeding" procedure to remove any trapped air from the hydraulic system, which can cause malfunction. This involves placing the pump handle over the release valve, turning it counter-clockwise (no more than two turns to open), slowly loosening the oil filler plug, and pumping the jack about 6 full strokes to distribute hydraulic fluid. This process should be repeated as needed, and the oil filler plug should then be retightened.

To raise a load:

  1. Park the vehicle on a hard, level surface, away from oncoming traffic.
  2. Turn off the vehicle's engine.
  3. Place the vehicle's transmission in PARK (automatic) or its lowest gear (manual).
  4. Set the emergency brake and chock the wheels that are not being lifted.
  5. Consult the vehicle owner's manual for proper jacking procedures and lift only at manufacturer-recommended locations.
  6. Ensure the load is centered on the jack's saddle.
  7. Place the pump handle over the release valve and turn it clockwise to close.
  8. Insert the handle into the handle socket and pump to raise the load.
  9. ALWAYS support the load with jack stands of appropriate capacity, placed beneath the vehicle at manufacturer-recommended locations. Jack stands should be at the same height if two are used.

To lower a load:

  1. Remove all tools and parts from under the vehicle.
  2. Position the jack's saddle under the lifting point.
  3. Turn the handle firmly clockwise to close the valve release screw, and pump the handle to raise the vehicle slightly above the jack stands.
  4. Collapse and remove the jack stands.
  5. SLOWLY turn the release valve counter-clockwise with the handle just enough to allow controlled descent of the vehicle onto the ground (never more than two full turns).
  6. Lower the jack completely and store it in a safe, dry location out of reach of children.

The manual emphasizes several safety points:

  • DO NOT exceed rated capacity.
  • DO NOT adjust the safety valve.
  • Wear ANSI approved safety goggles and heavy-duty work gloves.
  • Keep clear of the load while lifting and lowering.
  • Lower the load slowly.
  • DO NOT use for aircraft purposes.
  • Inspect the jack before every use; do not use if parts are loose or damaged.
  • DO NOT alter the product.
  • Keep the work area clean, well lit, and free of bystanders, children, and visitors.
  • DO NOT operate the jack while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication.
  • Store idle jacks out of reach of untrained persons.
  • DO NOT move the jack when the handle is in the operating lever or valve sleeve, as this can damage the pumping unit.

Maintenance Features:

Monthly maintenance is recommended to ensure the jack's longevity and proper function.

  1. Pre-use inspection: Before each use, inspect the jack for broken, cracked, or bent parts, loose or missing components, or any condition affecting proper operation. Damaged jacks must be removed from service and repaired by qualified personnel using only identical replacement parts.
  2. Bleeding: If the jack appears not to be working properly, follow the bleeding instructions outlined in the "Before Use" section.
  3. Storage: When not in use, the ram and pump piston should be in the fully down position to prevent corrosion of machined surfaces.
  4. Lubrication: Keep the jack clean and well lubricated at specified points (illustrated in Figure 3 of the manual).
  5. Hydraulic Fluid:
    • Use only hydraulic fluid with an SAE 20 rating for refills.
    • Check the fluid level with the jack in the fully down position; the fluid level should be up to the bottom of the oil fill port (Figure 5).
    • Change the hydraulic oil at least once every three years. To do this, lower the jack completely, remove the oil filler plug, tip the jack to drain the old oil, dispose of it properly, then with the jack upright, fill the housing with new, high-quality hydraulic oil until it just begins to run out of the oil fill hole. Reinstall the oil filler plug.
  6. Cleaning: Clean the jack with a clean cloth using a detergent or mild solvent.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues:

  • Will not lift load / Will not hold load / Will not lift to full height / Pump feels "spongy" under load / Handle raises under load / Handle lowers under load: These issues can be caused by low fluid, air in the system, or a valve not closing completely.
    • Low fluid: With the jack on a level surface and in the down position, remove the filler plug and add clean hydraulic jack fluid to the level of the filler port.
    • Air bound: Open the release valve a minimum of 2 full turns and pump the handle a minimum of 20 full strokes to purge air from the system.
    • Valve not closing completely: Close the release valve. With the jack in the fully lowered position, manually raise the lifting arm as high as possible. Then, open the release valve and allow the jack to descend to the lowered position.

The manual also includes a replacement parts list with item numbers and descriptions for various components, noting which parts are included in the W1623CK Repair Kit.
