The CONTACTRON Speed Starter is a motor switching device designed for starting, reversing, and protecting asynchronous motors against overload. It also incorporates a Safe Torque Off (STO) function for emergency stops. Additionally, the device allows for soft start/soft stop ramping and setting different speeds. It is specifically designed for use in control cabinets.
Function Description:
The device offers quick installation and startup due to its easy wiring and intuitive operation concept. It provides safe shutdown through its integrated Safe Torque Off (STO) function, which complies with EN ISO 13849-1: Category 4 PL e, IEC 61508: SIL 3, IEC/EN 61800-5-2: SIL 3, IEC 60204-1: Category 0, and IEC/EN 61800-5-2: safety standard for drives. The STO function is defined as the shutdown of a motor when there is no 24V signal on STO+ or no GND signal on STO-. It's important to note that activating the STO function does not galvanically isolate the motor.
The CONTACTRON Speed Starter controls motor voltage and frequency in a constant ratio (V/f operation). This proportionality is maintained up to the rated frequency and voltage of the motor, ensuring constant torque over wide ranges without overloading the motor. For very low speeds, where lower torque might result from ohmic resistance, parameters like "Start boost" and "Voltage lift" can be adjusted to increase torque.
The device features integrated full motor protection with a tripping class curve and thermal memory. If the motor load exceeds the nominal current, the device will trip according to this curve. The tripping time is frequency-dependent, with lower frequencies leading to quicker thermal memory loading.
Important Technical Specifications:

- Power (kW): Ranges from 0.25 kW to 1.5 kW, depending on the model.
- Output Frequency Range: 0.0 Hz to 500.0 Hz.
- Control Method: V/F (linear/square) for 3-phase asynchronous motors.
- Starting Torque: 150% / 3 Hz.
- Speed Control Range: 1:50 (V/F control for asynchronous motor, heavy duty, rated).
- Carrier Frequency: 4 kHz, 8 kHz, 16 kHz, AUTO (default: 4 kHz). A higher pulse frequency leads to higher derating.
- Overload Capability: 150% of rated output current for 60 s and 180% for 3 s. Tripping occurs at 300% output current immediately.
- Motor Protection: Includes over-current, over-voltage, over-heating, phase loss, ground fault, and low voltage protection.
- EMC Function: Models are available with or without a built-in EMC filter. Removing the IT jumper in models with a built-in EMC filter significantly reduces the filter's effect.
- Dimensions: Compact design with an overall width starting at 35 mm, contributing to space savings in control cabinets.
- Operating Temperature: -20 °C to 55 °C without current derating, up to 60 °C with linear current derating.
- Degree of Protection: IP20 / UL Open Type / NEMA 250 Type 1.
- Rated Humidity: Maximum 90% (operation), 95% (storage/transportation), non-condensing.
- Altitude: <2000 m (derating required for altitudes >1000 m).
- Relay Output: Configurable for warnings, errors, or both.
- PTC Input: Supports Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) thermistors for motor overheating protection.
Usage Features:
- Control Panel: Features a seven-segment digital LED display, rotary switches for "CURRENT," "RAMP," "STATUS," "SPEED1," "SPEED2," and "OPTIONS" positions, and "Up," "Down," "Set/Reset" buttons.
- Parameter Setting: Parameters like motor rated current, ramp time, motor rated frequency, motor rated voltage, highest output frequency, pulse frequency, V/F waveform, start boost, voltage lift, slip compensation, PTC enable/disable, parameter lock, parameter reset, identity code, firmware version, and relay output can be configured via the rotary switches and buttons.
- Speed Control: Two digital inputs (Speed1 and Speed2) allow for controlling motor speed by applying a 24 V signal. The direction of rotation can also be set.
- Status Monitoring: The "STATUS" position on the rotary switch displays active device status values such as output frequency, current, voltage, power factor, active power, and IGBT temperature.
- IT Jumper: The device includes an IT jumper for use in IT systems to prevent overvoltage of components. It must be removed in IT systems to avoid damage.
- Wiring: Features power terminals for mains and motor cables, and control terminals for digital inputs, outputs, and safety functions. Wiring precautions, such as using shielded cables for longer runs and proper grounding, are detailed.
Maintenance Features:
- Fan Kit: Available as an accessory (EM-CSS-FAN-35 and EM-CSS-FAN-45) for models requiring active cooling. Instructions for fan removal and installation are provided.
- EMC Shielding Plate: Available as an accessory (EM-CSS-CONTROLSHIELD-35/45 and EM-CSS-MOTORSHIELD-35/45) for enhanced EMC compliance.
- Error and Warning Codes: The device displays warning and error codes on the control panel, along with corresponding fault names, descriptions, and corrective actions, to aid in troubleshooting and maintenance. These include warnings for under/over voltage, STO activation, and over temperature, as well as errors for phase loss, motor overload, overcurrent, IGBT overheating, temperature detection failure, ground fault, short circuits, output phase loss, hardware check, firmware check, and parameter reset.
