Spark Arrestor
WARNING
Failure to heed the following warnings while servicing the spark
arrestor could result in serious injury or death.
Do not perform service on the spark arrestor while the system is
hot. Exhaust system temperatures can reach 1000° F. Allow
components to cool sufficiently before proceeding.
Remove any combustible materials from the area. Wear eye
protection and leather work gloves. Do not stand behind or in
front of the vehicle while purging. Never run the engine in an
enclosed area. Exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide
gas. Never go under the vehicle while it’ s inclined.
1. Remove the arrestor clean-out
plug(s) (1) from the bottom of the
muffler.
2. Place the transmission in PARK
and start the engine.
3. Purge carbon from the system by
momentarily revving the engine
several times.
4. If carbon is expelled, cover or plug t he exhaust outlet (2) and rap
on the pipe around the cleanout plug while revving the engine
several more times.
5. If particles are still suspected to be in the muffler, back the vehicle
onto an incline so the rear of the vehicle is one foot higher than the
front. Set the parking brake and block the wheels. Make sure the
vehicl e is in PARK and repeat steps 3 and 4 until no more particles
are expelled when the engine is revved.
6. Stop the engine and allow the arrestor to cool. Reinstall the
arrestor plug and remove the outlet cover or plug.
