Overview

The Blackwire 5200 Series is a corded USB headset designed for communication, offering both USB and 3.5 mm connection options for versatile use with computers and mobile devices. This user guide provides comprehensive instructions for setting up, fitting, and utilizing the headset's various functions, as well as troubleshooting common issues.

Function Description

The Blackwire 5200 Series headset is primarily designed for making and taking calls, listening to audio, and participating in virtual meetings. It features an inline control unit that allows users to manage calls, adjust volume, and mute the microphone directly from the cord. The headset integrates with Poly Lens Desktop App and Plantronics Hub Desktop App, which are essential for enabling advanced device behavior, customizing settings, and ensuring full call control functionality with compatible softphones. Without these applications or with incompatible softphones, users may need to initiate and end calls directly through their softphone application after pressing the headset's call button.

The inline control unit includes a call button, volume up and down buttons, and a mute button. The call button's LED indicators provide visual cues for different call states: a triple flash green indicates an incoming call, a double flash green signifies a call on hold, and a solid green light means a call is active. The mute button's LED turns solid red when the headset is muted, providing a clear visual confirmation of the microphone status.

Usage Features

Connectivity: The headset can be connected to a computer or mobile device via its USB connector or 3.5 mm connector. It is crucial to ensure the 3.5 mm connector is fully inserted into the headset controller for proper functionality.

Fit and Comfort:

  • Adjusting the Headband: The headband can be lengthened or shortened to achieve a comfortable fit, ensuring the ear cushions rest over the center of the ears.
  • Positioning the Boom: The microphone boom can be worn on either the left or right side. For optimal stereo listening, it is recommended to wear the boom on the left side. The boom should be rotated to align with the user's mouth.
  • Adjusting the Boom: The boom can be gently bent inward or outward to position it approximately one finger width from the corner of the mouth, optimizing microphone pickup.

Call Management:

  • Answering/Ending Calls: Users can tap the call button on the inline control or use their softphone application to answer or end a call.
  • Making Calls: Calls are initiated using the softphone application.
  • Redialing: When not on an active call, double-tapping the call button will redial the last number called.
  • Holding Calls: Double-tapping the call button during an active call will place the call on hold.

Volume Control:

  • Listening Volume: The volume up (+) and volume down (-) buttons on the inline control allow users to increase or decrease the listening volume.
  • Microphone Volume (Softphone): To adjust the headset microphone volume, users should place a test softphone call and then adjust both the softphone volume and the PC sound volume accordingly.

Mute Functionality:

  • Muting the Microphone: During a call, briefly pressing the mute button on the inline controller will mute the microphone. Pressing it again will unmute the microphone. The solid red LED on the mute button indicates that the microphone is muted.

Software Integration:

  • Poly Lens Desktop App: This application is vital for customizing device behavior, accessing advanced settings, and enabling device call control (answer/end and mute) functionality for certain softphones. It also facilitates firmware and software updates for the Poly device, which can improve performance and add new features.
  • Plantronics Hub Desktop App: Device settings are also accessible through this application.

Maintenance Features

Software Updates:

  • Keeping Firmware and Software Up-to-Date: Regularly updating the headset's firmware and software through the Poly Lens Desktop App is crucial for maintaining optimal performance and accessing new features.
  • Update Process Guidelines: During an update, it is important to avoid using the Poly device, starting a second update from another device, streaming media, or answering/placing calls to ensure a successful update process.

Troubleshooting: The user guide provides solutions for common issues:

  • High-Pitched Noise: Ensure the 3.5 mm connector is fully connected to the headset controller.
  • Cannot Hear Caller: Check listening volume on the headset and computer, verify the headset is set as the default audio device in sound settings, and ensure the 3.5 mm connector is fully connected.
  • Callers Cannot Hear User: Confirm the headset is not muted, the microphone boom is correctly aligned with the mouth, the headset is set as the default Voice device in sound settings, and the 3.5 mm connector is fully connected.
  • Distorted Sound/Echo: Lower the listen volume on the softphone, adjust headset volume, and ensure the 3.5 mm connector is fully connected.
  • Call Control/Mute Buttons Not Working with Softphone: Verify softphone compatibility, ensure Poly Lens Desktop App is installed to enable call control, and check if the mobile device supports call control functionality.
  • Other Headset Not Working for Music: The Blackwire 5200 Series may set itself as the default audio device in Windows; adjust audio settings in the sound control panel/preferences to change the audio device.
  • Phone Not Finding Headset During Call/Music: Ensure audio is routing to the desired headset by checking and defaulting settings.

By following these guidelines, users can effectively set up, operate, and maintain their Blackwire 5200 Series headset for a seamless communication experience.
