OWNER’S MANUAL

Questions and Answers

Overview

This document serves as the owner's manual for the Summer Waves Cartridge Filter Pump, designed for above-ground swimming pools, specifically models RP350 and RP400.

Function Description

The Summer Waves Cartridge Filter Pump is an essential component for maintaining clean and clear water in above-ground swimming pools. Its primary function is to circulate pool water through a filter cartridge, removing dirt, debris, and other impurities. The pump is equipped with a Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI) with a built-in timer function, allowing users to schedule operating times for optimal filtration and energy efficiency. It is designed to be easily assembled and maintained by adults, with clear instructions for setup, operation, and troubleshooting. The system ensures proper water circulation and filtration, contributing to a healthier and more enjoyable swimming environment.

Important Technical Specifications

The filter pump models RP350 and RP400 have distinct power specifications:

  • RP350:
    • Wattage: 20 Watts
    • Amperage: 0.35 Amps
  • RP400:
    • Wattage: 25 Watts
    • Amperage: 0.2 Amps

Both models are manufactured by Polygroup and are ETL controlled (numbers 4000608 and 4006317). They are double-insulated and grounded, operating at 120 Volts A.C. - 60 Hz. A minimum of 105 Volts A.C. is required for the unit to start and run properly.

The pump is designed for use with storable pools only, meaning pools that can be readily disassembled for storage and reassembled. It is not intended for permanently-installed pools.

The ASME Compliant Suction Fitting (PSF-100A and PSF-100B) is certified by IAPMO in accordance with ASME/ANSI/APSP/ICC-16 2011 standards. It is a submerged suction outlet fitting for above-ground swimming pools, intended for single drain use with only one outlet fitting per pump. The maximum allowable flow rate for this suction outlet fitting is 24 gallons per minute (1,440 gallons per hour). Model PSF-100A connects with a 1 ¼” (31.8mm) diameter hose, while Model PSF-100B connects with a 1 ½” (38.1mm) diameter hose. The suction outlet fitting should be mounted at an opening with a diameter between 1.77” to 1.85” (45mm to 47mm).

Usage Features

Setup and Installation:

  • The pump requires careful assembly by an adult, following detailed instructions provided in the manual.
  • It is crucial to install the filter pump before filling the pool with water.
  • Lubrication of gaskets and O-rings with petroleum jelly is recommended during installation to ensure a proper seal.
  • Hoses are connected to the suction and return fittings on the pool wall and secured with hose clamps to prevent leakage.
  • The pump system includes a Vent Screw for releasing trapped air, which is essential for smooth water flow.
  • The Return Fitting Diverter can be adjusted 360 degrees to maximize pool water circulation, ideally pointing down and away from the suction or water intake.

Operation:

  • The pump must be connected to a grounding type receptacle at least 15 feet (4.5 m) away from the pool.
  • The GFCI power cord set features a pre-set timer function. The default working time is 10 hours, followed by a 14-hour off period, completing a 24-hour cycle.
  • Users can adjust the operating time between 1 to 10 hours using the "SET" button, with each press increasing the time by 1 hour.
  • The GFCI plug includes "TEST" and "RESET" buttons for safety and control. The "TEST" button interrupts power to check the leakage protection function, while the "RESET" button restores power.
  • The pump is protected by a thermal switch, which automatically turns off the pump if it overheats due to high pool water temperature or low water flow, preventing damage and prolonging service life.

Safety Warnings:

  • The manual emphasizes critical safety precautions, including preventing drowning, avoiding entrapment near drains, and electrical shock risks.
  • Children must be closely supervised, and barriers may be required by local laws to restrict access to the pool.
  • The filter pump canister should not be used as a climbing hazard to gain access to the pool.
  • Users are warned against using extension cords and advised to ensure the ground under their feet is "Bone Dry" when touching electrical parts.
  • The pool should not be used if any suction outlet cover is missing, broken, or inoperative.

Maintenance Features

Filter Cartridge Care:

  • The filter cartridge should be cleaned daily by pressure washing with a garden hose, ensuring all pleats are thoroughly rinsed.
  • For stubborn dirt, oils, or algae, the cartridge can be soaked in a solution of tri-sodium phosphate (TSP) or a strong detergent, or a mixture with pool chlorine/household bleach for algae problems.
  • After cleaning, the cartridge should be allowed to dry and gently brushed to avoid damage.
  • Regular replacement of the filter cartridge is necessary, and genuine Polygroup® / Summer Waves® brand cartridges are recommended.
  • A spare "stand-by" filter cartridge is suggested for continuous filtration during cleaning or replacement.

Pool Water Care:

  • Daily checking and adjustment of pH and chlorine levels are crucial. Recommended pH levels are between 7.3 and 7.8, and chlorine levels between 1.0 and 1.6 ppm.
  • The manual stresses that the filter pump alone cannot prevent algae growth; proper chemical maintenance is essential.
  • Superchlorination every other week is recommended to destroy combined chlorine, ammonia, nitrogen, and organic compounds.
  • Users are advised to test pool water at a local pool supply store for additional chemical needs, especially if using well water.
  • Concentrated chemicals should be mixed in a 5-gallon bucket of water before adding to the pool, and never dropped directly into the pool.

Troubleshooting and Disassembly:

  • A detailed troubleshooting guide helps identify and resolve common issues such as motor failure, slow water flow, and improper cleaning.
  • Instructions are provided for disassembling the pump for inspection, particularly for the rotor assembly.
  • The rotor assembly, including the rotor shaft, magnet axle, and impeller, should be inspected for damage. Replacement rotor assemblies can be purchased from polygroupstore.com.
  • Proper reassembly of the pump components, including correct alignment of the rotor assembly and fastening of the volute housing, is critical for function.

Storage:

  • For storage, the pump should be turned off, unplugged, and all water drained from the system.
  • All filter pump parts, including the filter cartridge, should be cleaned and dried.
  • Gaskets and O-rings should be liberally lubricated with petroleum jelly before reassembling and storing in an airtight plastic bag.
  • The entire unit should be stored in a dry environment where temperatures remain above 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0°C).
  • The suction outlet fitting assembly should also be removed and stored if temperatures are expected to fall below 32°F (0°C).
  • The PSF-100A or PSF-100B Suction Outlet Fitting should be replaced every 5 years.
