6.3 Generator Set Maintenance
Inspect the genset daily or after every eight hours
of operation, whichever comes rst.

chanical, exhaust, fuel, and DC electrical systems
as described below.

Inspectanysignsofmechanicaldamage.Startthe
gensetandlistenforanyunusualnoise,whichmay
indicatemechanicalproblems.Repairthemimme-
diatelyifnecessary.
Inspectthemountingfastenerstomakesurethe
gensetissecureinitscompartment.Ifuseanun-
der-oorhousing,makesurethatthegensetisse-
curedtothehousing.
Checkthegensetairinletandoutletarea,make
surethattheyarenotblockedwithdebris.
Cleanthemachineimmediatelywheneverdustand
dirtbegintoaccumulate.Usuallyremovedustand
dirtwithadampcloth.

(3)ExhaustSystem
Startthegenset,inspecttheentireexhaustsystem
includingtheexhaustpipe,exhaustelbowandmuf-
erduringthemachinerunning.
Visuallyandaudiblycheckforleaksatallconnec-
tions,welds,gaskets,andjoints.
Ifanyleaksarefoundout,shutdownthemachine
anddonotoperateuntilcorrected.Replacecor-
rodedexhaustcomponentsifnecessarybefore
leaksoccur.

(4)FuelSystem
Startthegenset,inspectthefuelsupplylines,re-
turnlines,lters,andttingsforleaksduringthe
machinerunning.
Inspectallexiblesectionsforcuts,cracksand
abrasions.Makesurethatthefuellinesdonotrub
againstanythingthatcouldbreakthem.Replace
wornfuellinecomponentsifnecessarybeforeleaks
occur.
•Fuelleakagewillcausearehazardwhichcan
resultinseverepersonalinjuryorevendeathif
ignited.Whencheckingforleaks,donotsmoke
orallowanyspark,ameorotherignitionsource
inthearea.Ifanyleaksarefoundout,repairthem
immediately.
(5)DCElectricalSystem
Inspectthebatteryterminalsforcleanandconnec-
tionsfortightwiththegensetoff.Looseorcorroded
connectionsmaycauseresistancewhichcanim-
pedestarting.Cleanandreconnectloosebattery
cablesifnecessary.
Inordertoreducethepossibilityofarcing,always
disconnectthenegative(-)batterycablerstand
connectitaftermaintaining.
•Ignitionofexplosivebatterygascancreatesevere
personalinjury.
•Weargoggles,protectiverubberglovesandapron
anddonotsmokewhileservicingbatteries.
